Slim and trim: With the swimsuits comes the diet advice

<!–Saxotech Paragraph Count: 19
–>

The biggest mistake dieters make, he said, is “performing classic cardio (running, biking). Instead, do interval strength training (to) raise metabolism, and give you the long, lean look you desire.”

“Ultimate Volumetrics Diet,” by Barbara Rolls with Mindy Hermann (William Morrow, $27.50)

The book combines research with solutions to give readers a guide to managing weight.

Rolls is a professor of nutritional sciences at Pennsylvania State University. She is the author of more than 250 research articles and six books, including “The Volumetrics Weight Control Plan.”

Her best advice is, “The way you eat each day should provide you with the nutrients and calories for both good health and a healthy weight.”

The biggest mistake dieters make, she said, is “many dieters try to give up favorite foods forever, and that undermines the long-term sustainability of any diet.”

“Weight Loss Boss,” by David Kirchhoff (Rodale Books, $25.99)

It includes the author’s personal weight struggles, as well as insights from Weight Watchers members. Kirchhoff is president and CEO of Weight Watchers.

His best advice is: “Stop thinking like dieters. Start thinking like people who are trying to create happy and healthier habits that they can keep for life.”

The biggest mistake dieters make, he said, is “thinking that the key to losing weight is two months of deprivation …. The foods you are eating while you are losing weight should be the foods you can see yourself eating for the rest of your life. Focus on finding foods you can love that will love you right back.”

“The Blood Sugar Solution,” by Mark Hyman (Little, Brown and Company $27.99)

This is a six-week plan to reverse diabetes and obesity, referred to as diabesity. Hyman is chairman of the Institute for Functional Medicine and the author of UltraMetabolism.

His best advice: “Eat real food — nothing processed or prepared. Eat protein for breakfast such as eggs, nut butters, protein shake. Don’t drink your calories: no juices, sodas, sport drinks. Have breakfast every day and have three meals and two snacks.”

The biggest mistake dieters make, he said, is “eating low-fat foods. Skipping meals to lose weight. Counting calories, fat grams or carbs instead of focusing on quality and fresh whole food.”

“The Starch Solution,” by John McDougall with Mary McDougall (Rodale Books, $26.99)

The program encourages people to solve health problems, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and arthritis, using diets based on rice, corn and potatoes.

John McDougall is a physician who helps people overcome illnesses with diet plans.

His best advice: “Eat more starch. Avoid fats and oils. The fat you eat is the fat you wear. … Appetite-satisfying bread, rice, corn, potatoes and beans should replace fattening oils, cheeses and pork chops.”

The biggest mistake dieters make, he said, is “believing the fault is their own. They must stop believing there is something psychologically wrong with them.”

Nutritionist Pierre Dukan has been struck off as a doctor in France after he was accused of giving dangerous advice to teenagers

Controversial: Nutritionist Pierre Dukan has been struck off as a doctor in France after he was accused of giving dangerous advice to teenagers

A diet guru whose fans include the Duchess of Cambridge’s mother has been struck off the medical register in France after being accused of misadvising teenagers.

Pierre Dukan, 70, asked to be removed from the doctors’ list at his own request because he was facing disciplinary action.

The nutritionist had used a book to propose ideal weights for 17 and 18 year-old school pupils, giving them extra exam marks if they kept to them.

It led to a formal complaint from the College of Physicians in Paris, who said that the scheme could lead to increased cases of obesity and anorexia.

The physicians said Dukan’s proposal was in breach of article 13 of the medical ethics code which states: ‘A doctor must be aware of the repercussions his views can have on the public.’

There was also an allegation that Dukan’s £80 million plus slimming business might be in breach of medical codes.

But Dukan insisted that the advice contained in his best-selling books was all part of a doctor’s right to freedom of expression.

Dukan had retired as a medical practitioner anyway, and so insisted that the disciplinary proceedings were void.

Now medical ethics chiefs have told La Croix newspaper that Dukan asked to be struck off the register on April 19.

Dr Irene Kahn-Bensaude, head of the Paris branch of the Physicians’ College, said: ‘I think he made this decision when he saw things were not going his way in medical ethics circles.’

She suggested that Dukan’s move was part of a damage limitation exercise because a guilty verdict might damage his diet guru business.

And Dr Kahn-Bensaude insisted that Dukan’s move would not halt the disciplinary action against him, and that charges ‘will go all the way’.

Last year experts from the British Dietetic Association named the Dukan Diet the worst celebrity weight loss plan, saying it has ‘absolutely no solid science behind it at all’.

The Dukan Diet is said to be followed by the Duchess of Cambridge’s mother Carole Middleton, as well as Jennifer Lopez, supermodel Gisele Bundchen and Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins.

It has also been suggested that the Duchess of Cambridge has also followed the controversial diet.

It is a complicated four-phase diet that starts with a protein-only approach which promotes weight loss of around 7lb per week.

It topped the BDA’s annual list of the five worst celebrity diets to avoid in the New Year.

It works on restricting foods, calories and portion control. However, the BDA says cutting out food groups is not advisable.

The BDA said: ‘This diet is so confusing, very rigid, full of very French foods that most Brits would run a mile from like rabbit and offal, and even Dr Dukan himself warns of the associated problems like lack of energy, constipation and bad breath.’

I don’t know where the BDA get their ideas from; it sounds as if the fact that it is free …… To my certain knowledge the Dukan Diet has been approved by a UK qualified doctor and other highly medically qualified staff who have used it themselves. There is nothing “French” about it, the items being freely available in the UK. It is simple, straightforward and highly effective in the long term – my wife has held several stones off her weight off since the DM first covered the diet two years ago. I know of a French doctor in France who has given it his approval with the caveat that a specified patient with a very serious heart complaint should not follow it – sensible advice in the circumstances. Dr Dukan’s dispute with his qualifying body is a different matter and not relevant to the safety and effectiveness of his recommended diet. As for advising that overweight students should use exam marks – controversial but it could have a beneficial effect in obese Britain

@’Hardy’s Girl’… I agree with you! Sorry I missed the green arrow got the red by mistake!! You talk sense.

The whole episode surprises me. He is clever and experienced enough to know better. However, if he said what he did through idealism, he could have gone down fighting in order to make his point.

I needed to lose 1 stone and did the Dukan diet. I did it sensibly and just did the attack for 2 days then 1 day protien 1 day protien and veg. I went back to normal food after 3 months and 1 stone less. I eat normally but only very little bread, potatoes and pasta. I enjoy a glass of wine and the odd piece of chocolate and one year later I’m still 1 stone less. I’m 71 years of age and fit as a fiddle. This is really a change of style of eating and not a diet – be sensible and eat less as you get older, you need less calories and not carrying extra weight makes you feel better.

Dying to lose weight!!!
Dangerous game, all this body abuse will come out in the end. There are no tricks or magic potions. It’s so simple and that’s why no one gets it. Eat right, sleep right get some exercise, laugh a lot and love! AND don’t be taken in by the media telling you how you should look or live! Live life, don’t just manage it!!!!

Idiotic man and idiotic diet. IMO, of course. But I’m sure he’s made lots of money, so he’s probably happy enough.

Good! The man is an idiot. The Dukan diet is dangerous anyway, The Primal diet is a much healthier choice and wont make you weak, faint and grumpy either.

Will Michelle Obama call him to the States to make his plan law here? If this sounds ridiculous (and it is), we’ve got examples here of kids who were forced to repeat PE to graduate high school after they fainted from asthmatic attacks during a required timed running test – after the dear teachers deliberately ignored the students’ notes from their doctors. Things are getting crazy here and nothing would surprise me except good sense and common decency.

See we haven’t cornered the market on fruitcakes, France has it’s own fair share

The daftest diet ever: Skip breakfast, take cold baths, blow up balloons… and craziest of all it might just work

By

Skip breakfast, eat three large meals a day and glug coffee. It sounds like a list of things you shouldn’t do if you want to shed the pounds.

But a new weight-loss plan — that’s so popular that it recently knocked the Dukan Diet off the top of the iTunes book chart — claims this is exactly what dieters should be doing . . . turning traditional weight-loss wisdom on its head.

Written by London-based personal trainer Venice A. Fulton, Six Weeks To OMG is based on a combination of scientific research and Fulton’s own experience of helping high-profile clients lose weight and shape up.

Fulton says if you adapt his advice to fit your lifestyle, you can lose up to 20lb in six weeks

Fulton says if you adapt his advice to fit your lifestyle, you can lose up to 20lb in six weeks

Unlike most other regimes, Fulton doesn’t offer structured meal-plans or recipes. But he says that if you adapt his advice to fit your lifestyle, you can lose 10lb to 20lb in six weeks. We take a look at what he has to say . . .

STEP 1: Don’t Eat Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? Wrong!

This is the scariest but most important part of my diet plan — but I want you to stop eating breakfast for six weeks.

When you go to bed there’s always a small amount of energy in your system — food in your stomach, some in your blood, and a bit stored away in your liver. But because your brain still works as you sleep, by the time you wake there’s nothing left. As a result, the brain sends out hunger signals for you to have breakfast.

But do you know what? If you have spare body fat to lose, you don’t need a bowl of cereal or a slice of toast because you are actually carrying your own breakfast buffet around with you.

Don’t eat, and move your body when it’s low on food energy (that is, when you’ve just woken up and before you’ve eaten) and your body will have to burn some of your body fat.

STEP 2: Take a Skinny Dip

Taking a cool bath every morning will encourage your body to burn off stored fat as it tries to keep warm, and it has been shown to significantly boost metabolism for 12 to 15 hours.

You need to bathe in water between 15 and 20c (use a plastic thermometer) for no longer than 15 minutes. The water needs to be deep enough to reach your belly button when you’re sitting up.

Jumping straight into a cold bath is always a bad idea. Once the bath is filled to the correct level and you are sure the temperature is correct, use a timer and start by standing in the water for two minutes before sitting down for five minutes.

If you’re very brave, you can then slowly lean back and lie in the water for  three minutes (or just sit in it for up to five minutes). Carefully get out of the bath, put on some warm clothes and move around.

Do not be tempted to add hot water to the bath or take a warm shower — the shock  could cause you to faint.

(Warning: Changes in body temperature can temporarily affect blood pressure. Do not take a skinny dip if you have a history of heart trouble, problems with your blood pressure or diabetes.)

STEP 3: Time for Coffee

Coffee is nature's secret fat-burning potion

Coffee is nature’s secret fat-burning potion

After your bath, it’s time for a cup of coffee. Coffee is nature’s secret fat-burning potion — use it in the right way and it will help you lose weight.

The secret is caffeine. When you have it on an empty stomach, it tells your body to burn fat faster.

Caffeine makes fat cells open up and empty their fat into your bloodstream. From there, fat can be transported to your  muscles. They then use this liquid fatty-fuel to power them. And you get slimmer!

But you must combine your morning caffeine shot with physical activity. If you don’t, the fat stays in the bloodstream, and can eventually fur up arteries.

The most reliable place to find caffeine is in a cup of coffee. Drink just one small cup (instant or ground) black, with no sugar, artificial sweetener or milk.

Anything with sweetener, sugar or milk will trigger the body to release insulin, which tells your body that food is on its way, and will stop you burning fat.

STEP 4: Get Moving

The combination of caffeine in your bloodstream and physical activity will encourage your body to burn off more stored fat. Scientists have observed that ‘naturally slim’ people move around much more.

The more muscles you use at any one time, the better.  Walking and gardening are good as they use your legs, arm, back and chest muscles.

Choose an activity you enjoy and do it for 30 minutes. If it’s outside, that’s even better. Natural daylight, especially between 8am and 9am, has been shown to reset our internal body clocks, boost vitamin D production and boost levels of feel-good hormones.

STEP 5: Start Eating

Eat three filling meals a day in order to lose weight

Eat three filling meals a day in order to lose weight

Many diets tell us that eating little and often boosts metabolism and aids weight loss, but in my experience this often leads to uncontrollable, all-day grazing.Three filling meals a day may sound old fashioned but it works if you’re trying to lose weight.

Body fat exists to give us energy when we’re not taking any in the form of food. So we can only burn body fat if we leave gaps between meals.

The more frequently you eat, the smaller the gaps and the less chance you have of burning off stored fat.

Eating three times a day, with no snacks, will also help control your appetite better.

When we eat, our body releases a chemical called leptin, which tells the brain when it’s time to stop eating, and tells our metabolism to rev up.
It takes approximately 20 minutes for this connection to work.

Snacking on the hoof means we’ve often eaten way too much by the time leptin has kicked in. Sitting down to a meal, however, has been shown to raise leptin more effectively and shut appetite off for longer.

The best time of day to start eating is around lunchtime.  The timing for your other two meals is up to you — and may vary according to your schedule: say 4pm and 8pm.

Ideally your last meal of the day should be no less than two hours before you go to sleep.

Step 6: Count Those Carbs

Each meal should be made up of 50 per cent protein. This may sound a lot, but as well as being essential to a healthy diet, protein foods reduce appetite and keep it under control for hours.

Good protein choices are chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, fish, eggs, plain full-fat yoghurt, nuts, seeds, lentils and chickpeas.

But if you want to be slim, you must control your carb intake. Until you get familiar with portion sizes, aim to eat no more than 120g of carbohydrates a day.

Choose unrefined carbohydrates to feel fuller for longer and to maintain steady blood sugars.

Eat as many vegetables as you like (with the exception of baked beans, beetroot, carrots, parsnips, potatoes and sweetcorn, which count as carbs) once your protein and carbs are served up.

However, eat no more than three pieces of fruit a day. Its high fructose (fruit sugar) content can play havoc with appetite, blocking the effect of leptin — the chemical that tells our brain when we’re full.

The best fruits are those low in fructose: avocado, blueberry, grapefruit, guava, pineapple, plum, strawberry and tomato.

Try to have oily fish like salmon, sardines or mackerel and/or flax seed twice a week.  Essential fats help keep your appetite on track and control carbohydrate cravings.

And drink water and green tea. Aside from your morning cup of coffee, avoid caffeinated, sugary and alcoholic drinks.

Six Weeks To OMG — Get  Skinnier Than All Your Friends  is available on Kindle from Amazon.co.uk and iTunes (£4.99).

HOW TO GET A FLAT TUMMY

It sounds weird but blowing up balloons will strengthen and flatten the transversus muscle that lies across your stomach.

Buy a pack of mixed balloons (some easy to blow up and some more challenging).

Start with an easy balloon and stand up in front of a mirror (ideally just before bedtime — when lung capacity is at its peak).

Hold your elbows up level with your face as you blow.

Once your balloon is blown up, let the air out, and repeat ten times.

Take a three-minute break immediately if you start to feel dizzy.

Blow up balloons on alternate days (using a new balloon each day), adding two more inflations each time until you reach 20. It’s then 20 inflations every other day to keep your tummy flat.

(NB: Not suitable for people with high blood pressure, hernias, stomach ulcers or lower back problems.)

I have been doing this (not the cold baths though) since Dec. and have lost nearly 2 stones. Didn’t realise this was a ‘diet’ it works well for me : )

this is stupid! eating breakfast is VITAL it gets you motablism working, I should know i lost 5 stone with my diet!
Cold baths do work however as the body works harder trying to warm itself up

just a rip off of the “Four Hour Diet”

well thats pretty much how I eat and I didn’t even realise I was “on a diet” ..ever since my son who’s 4 I went from 64 kig and have been between 50 and 55 ever since without going hungry. Never understood why ..now I do :)

This sort of diet really does work, at least for me! Coffee and square meals are the key. Also skipping breakfast is important. If I eat breakfast I feel less energetic, sometimes almost lethargic because my body is using all it’s energy on trying to burn the food and not my body fat. If I just drink lots of water and coffee in the morning ’til lunch I feel awesome. Coffee is my best friend, It gives me energy and keeps my metabolism going without the fear of me gaining a single pound! ;)

All these people that still say eat less move moe simples ate do annoying. If that simple there would be no obesity epidemic. So wind your lanky necks in !

Many years ago when I was thin. I didn’t eat breakfast and ate 2other meals of reasonable size and nutritional value. Then I was told by everyone I must eat breakfast the most important meal of the day. I gained a stone a year for years (For 3 years. ) althougj I was exercising regularly and hard ! I have decided to give this diet a try. I am already eating less regularly and without hunger pain. I have already lost a significant amount and haven’t even tried the cold baths. We are yAll as a family enjoying the balloons. Well who wouldn’t?

EAT BETTER AND EXERCISE. How hard is it? If I can lose 5 and a half stone, anyone can!

Porridge is stodge, and eating it is the fastest way to put weight ON.

The way to be thin is to eat natural, whole foods, especially fruit and vegetables. The reason people are fat is because of all the highly refined, processed and artificial foods they’re eating. It’s so obvious it’s a joke.

Top Secret Nutrition Doubles The Amount of Raspberry Ketones In Its Already Successful Diet Accelerator Supplement

A Safe, Effective, and Natural Way to Burn Fat and Lose Weight

Miramar, Florida (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

Top Secret Nutrition is excited to announce the reformulation of its popular and effective Diet Accelerator supplement. The change, doubling the amount Raspberry Ketones from 100mg to 200mg per serving, while appearing minor promises to have a very positive impact on the effectiveness of the product.

The very popular Dr. Oz, in a show that aired February 6th, referred to Raspberry Ketones as the “miracle fat burner in a bottle to stimulate fat burning and weight loss.” Dr. Oz’ comments brought to light how effective Raspberry Ketones as an ingredient to lose weight. His comments were made one day after the official launch of our new product, L-Carnitine Plus Raspberry Ketones. “ We sold out of inventory in less than one day” said Tom Richardson, Top Secret Nutrition’s CEO. “We were in the process of increasing the amount of Raspberry Ketones in the Diet Accelerator when Dr. Oz spoke. The first thing we did was triple the size of the upcoming production run!” added Tom.

“The key to success in any diet is the ability to execute the plan. The Diet Accelerator is an amazing stand-alone product, but is at its best as a supplement to support, accelerate, and ease the pain of any diet plan a person chooses,” states Kristal Richardson, SVP of brands and Professional IFBB figure competitor.

The Diet Accelerator also contains a novel combination of fish oils plus conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). A recent study conducted at the University of Texas showed this combination to be more effective in boosting weight loss.

The Diet Accelerator includes one packet per day with seven pills. The ingredients combine to: accelerate fat burning, protect lean muscle mass, replace the vitamins and minerals often diminished by diet regimes, improve the mood, and much more. The product is one of the main components of Top Secret Nutrition’s growing list of effective weight management supplements. The line includes products to affect appetite, the rate of fat burning, the digestive process, to clean and detox the digestive system and more, all with an emphasis on utilizing only high quality and healthy ingredients.

The Diet Accelerator product is currently available at some of the largest online supplement retailers, including bodybuilding.com and nutrasource.com, as well as in some of the major “brick and mortar” retailers such as The Vitamin Shoppe. The Diet Accelerator is distributed by Europa Sports Products and Select Nutrition Distributors to numerous sports nutrition stores both online and “brick and mortar.” More information about the product as well as about all the other Top Secret Nutrition products can be found at http://www.topsecretnutrition.com.

The daftest diet ever… and craziest of all it might just work

Here’s what other readers have said. Why not add your thoughts,

Agree with the man! If the mainstream belief regarding diet that is thrown down our throats is true, then WHY do people generally tend to binge after they have lost the weight?

I lost 30 pounds, want to know how I did it (and keep it off)? Eat 3 meals a day (breakfast included) and workout 6-7 days a week. I think this guy is full of garbage! I personally think breakfast is important since I’m a runner and if I don’t eat before I run I’ll have no energy and get dehydrated. I also know a few people who lost weight by eating breakfast. Keep in mind, everyone’s bodies are different and have different needs.

I’m in my 60s and for the most part have never eaten breakfast and have never been over weight. The other secret is to weigh yourself every morning when you get up. If you weigh more than you want then you eat the minimum you can that day. If you are under your normal weight, then treat yourself .

Idiotic. The best “diet” a woman can have is get an education, get a good job and then make her own rules about what women should look like.

Sounds like an awful alot of work, think I’d rather just calorie count.

If you skip break fast and work out you are the biggest idiot to walk this planet, Instead of your body using stored fat it will use muscle, and enter survival mode, who ever came up with that literally has no idea of what they’re doing. I lost 1stone and a half in 2 months by 1)limiting carbs 2)EATING A FORM OF BREAKFAST, usually a handful of natural nuts (natural fats) and a banana 3)Eating lots of chicken and 4 drinking lots of water, obviously I haven’t included all my dieting stuff in here but it works and is alot better then this stupidity

Well, i’m as skinny as a rake and I eat 3 huge meals a day, and no breakfast – lack of time, i thought it would help me put on weight eating huge meals…but 2 years down the line…still skinny. May its just genes though.

Well skipping breakfast and going to straight to gym before you eat is obviously gonna work! Don’t like the bath idea tho, not with the cost of water in my area!

The picture of the coffee shows a latte!

He’s right! I’m a skinny California girl and this is how I eat. I skip breakfast and go straight to my workout and after I have a big cup of coffee. I don’t eat anything until lunch and then again at dinner and then I have dessert! I fill my meals up with lots of protein and veggies and like to snack on fruits like strawberries, grapefruit and avocado. It works!!!
