Paula Deen Weight Loss: Sheds 30 Pounds From Size 18 To 10 With Diabetes-Friendly Diet Plan [BEFORE & AFTER PHOTOS]

Just six months after announcing that she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, Southern cuisine chef Paula Deen sported massive weight loss on the cover of People magazine, admitting that she shed 30 pounds and dropped from a women’s size 18 to a 10 with a diabetes-friendly diet plan.

“I do think differently now,” 65-year-old Deen told People, regarding food. “I’m more aware.”

So what kind of foods are on the Food Network star’s radar? Which clearly have worked to help her slim down?

Deen said she has ditched some of her favorite foods, like potatoes, and developed an appreciation for Greek salads and baked fish, which can be attributed to the 30 pound drop.

“It took me a couple of years to get to this point,” Deen said. “If you make a few small changes, they can add up to big results.”

The Food Network chef also said she ditched her infamous sugary tea, opting for water instead. She satisfies her sweet tooth with “a bowl of sugar-free ice cream with strawberries and blueberries on top.”

In May, Deen also said that changing her portions has helped.

“I’m arranging my plate differently,” Deen told Prevention. “(Before) I would have had a lot of ham and just a little bit of squash. But the night before last, I had lots of squash, a little slice of ham, a nice serving of green beans and a tablespoon of fresh peas.”

Deen said her diet with just “a spoonful” of carbs isn’t completely healthy; She told People magazine that once a week, she allows herself to eat whatever she wants and still has her favorite dish of fried chicken monthly, instead of weekly.

She also told “Entertainment Tonight” in May that she spends 30 minutes walking on a treadmill each day.

Deen announced to the world in January that three years prior she had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. She had kept her diabetes a secret until an appearance on the “Today” show when she decided to come clean about her condition, which stemmed from obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle of fried foods and lack of exercise.

Paula Deen was under heavy criticism for keeping the condition a secret and announcing it the same day she signed a $500 montly deal to endorse a diabetes drug manufactured by Novo Nordisk, namely from Anthony Bourdain of “No Reservations” who called her “greedy.”

“I find that in excruciatingly bad taste,” Bourdain told ABC’s “Good Morning America” in April. “It’s unconscionable, cynical and greedy. Thirty million dollars a year. How much money do you need?”

But Paula Deen didn’t let the backlash get to her.

“I was surprised by the depth of hate,” Deen told People. “This is not something I chose. I had been given lemons and I had to try to make lemonade — without sugar!”

And Paula Deen isn’t done losing weight, as she plans to lose an additional 15 pounds.

“I feel a thousand times better,” Deen said. “I have more energy. I sleep better. The weight loss has made my health issues better.”

Surprising weight loss plan: ‘Dessert with breakfast diet’

If you are looking for a new weight loss plan because others have failed, you might be surprised to learn that a ‘dessert with breakfast’ diet plan actually helped people lose more than 30 pounds in four months. In a new study presented at The Endocrine Society’s 94th Annual Meeting, investigators found eating dessert with a carbohydrate and protein rich breakfast helped people lose and maintain weight loss.

Dessert with breakfast reduces food cravings

Daniela Jakubowicz, MD, the study’s principal investigator and a senior physician at Tel Aviv University’s Wolfson Medical Center in Holon, Israel explained in a press release that eating dessert with your morning meal helps shed pounds because it addresses an important component of weight loss – food cravings and hunger that can occur throughout the day or night that can thwart the best diet plan.

Ads by Google

The study included non-diabetic participants. One group was allowed to eat a sweet dessert with breakfast that included chocolate, a cookie a donut or cake.

The other group ate a low-carbohydrate diet with 10 grams of carbohydrates that was only 304 calories. The dessert group ate a 600-calorie breakfast with 60 grams of carbs.

Both of the groups had protein with breakfast, but the ‘dessert with breakfast’ participants ate 45 grams of protein from egg whites, tuna, or low-fat milk, which was 15 grams more than the low-carbohydrate diet group.

Surprising results

Both groups lost 33 pounds halfway through the 8-month study, but the surprising results showed that eating dessert with breakfast helped people keep weight off, which is difficult for anyone who has been on a weight loss plan.

Both diets contain the same number of calories – approximately 1600 for men and 1400 calories for women.

How it might work

Both diet groups kept food diaries.

The ‘dessert with breakfast diet’ made it easier for people to stick to their calorie restrictions, the researchers found. People who ate cookies, cake or donuts at breakfast reported less hunger and fewer food cravings compared to the low carb, lower calorie breakfast eaters.

The researchers also found out that levels of the “hunger hormone” ghrelin dropped more with dessert at breakfast, compared to the low carbohydrate meal: 45.2 percent versus 29.5 percent respectively.

Jakubowicz believes the ‘dessert with breakfast diet’:

  1. Satisfies the appetite because it combines carbohydrates with protein.
  2. Curbs hunger because of the high protein content.
  3. Decreases cravings for sweets and fatty and starchy foods that happens when we restrict sweets.

Eating a 600 calorie, protein, carbohydrate rich diet that includes dessert for breakfast might be an approach worth exploring, especially if you’ve tried others and find yourself with food cravings. Women in the study were allowed 500 calories for lunch and about 300 calories for dinner and men could eat 600-calorie at lunch and up to 464 calories at dinner. If you want to splurge on a donut, cookie or favorite pastry for breakfast, it might just be okay for your waistline and actually lead to sustained weight loss, according to the study that included almost 200 obese participants.

More than one in 10 brides lose four stone or more for their wedding day

Research reveals the true extent to which weddings and marriage impact on women’s weight; leading experts urge women to consider their dieting habits to avoid potential long term harm to their health

Over five million women in the UK lose weight for their big day, with more than one in 10 losing a massive four stone or more, according to research by XLS-Medical Fat Binder.

Yet despite all the effort that goes into slimming down for the big day, 57 per cent of women undo all their pre-wedding dieting efforts by gaining weight on their honeymoon and beyond, with over a quarter gaining at least half a stone.

This drastic dieting, coupled with a rising number of shocking ‘I do’ diet trends have led experts to call for women to carefully consider their wedding weight loss plans, in order to avoid any potential long term weight gain.

Dr Matt Capehorn, Clinical Director at the National Obesity Forum, says: “Drastic and rapid weight loss for a particular event or occasion, such as a wedding, is not advisable for a number of reasons.  You should be aiming for steady weight loss, as a result of sensible dietary and lifestyle change, that promotes sustainable weight loss and health benefits.  Any variation from this should only be on the advice of a clinician.

“Rapid weight loss, especially if done without support, is likely to result in weight regain.  Undertaking a healthy eating and exercise plan with a realistic goal in mind will ensure dieters are not only looking good but feeling great for their wedding day and beyond.”

Leading UK dietitian Helen Bond and consultant to the ‘123 hello me’ programme, the online support programme for XLS-Medical, comments: “It’s not surprising that for many brides to be, losing weight will be an important part of their wedding day preparation. However, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight should be considered a lifelong challenge rather than a short-term fix. You don’t need to make big changes, just a few small steps can make a real difference, such as meal planning, ensuring you’re hydrated and removing temptation — out of sight really can be out of mind.”

Helen Bond’s top wedding diet tips:

1.  Set a realistic weight loss goal. A weight loss goal should be challenging and require you to make an effort, but not be an impossible mission. Over ambitious targets can be easily broken! But by setting smaller goals, you have a real chance of reaching your wedding weight loss goal and boosting your confidence in your abilities to keep on track until you arrive at your destination. Aim to lose about five to ten per cent of your initial body weight over a 3-6 month period. Once you’ve reached your goal, treat yourself and your bridesmaids to celebrate your success and set another weight loss target.

2. Be prepared for the inevitable good and bad days. Don’t get discouraged by the occasional set back. When days don’t go according to plan, don’t give up. As long as you are eating well most of the time, you can be less strict with yourself some of the time. Think positively, focus on your overall goals and get back on track — tomorrow is a new (healthier) day. If you feel you are lacking motivation or hitting a slump, call on your bridesmaids or husband to be to help keep you on track.

3. Keep a food and mood diary. Most of us literally don’t know what we are eating, or how all the things we unconsciously eat are adding up – finishing of your child’s fish fingers, testing wedding cake or nibbling on canapés during engagement celebrations! For long term weight loss you need to identify problem foods and ‘areas of weaknesses’ in your day. By keeping a food diary, you will become more aware of your eating patterns and the changes you need to make. Carry a small notebook with you and write down all the things you eat and drink on a typical day, along with any associated feelings. You can also keep your wedding to do list in here so everything is in one place. According to research in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine ‘dieters’ who jot down everything they eat and drink lose twice as much weight as those that don’t.

4. Take small steps. There are lots of simple things you can do to kick start your wedding weight loss diet. You don’t need to make big changes, just a few small steps can make a real difference to reaching your goal, whether it’s looking at food labels to taking dance classes in preparation for your first dance, making sure you always start off the day with a healthy breakfast or signing yourself and your bridesmaids up to take part in a 5km charity race. As the Old Chinese Proverb said, it is better to take many small steps in the right direction than one great leap forward only to stumble backward.

5. Think positively. Focus on all the wonderful delicious, nutritious and seasonal foods that you can enjoy as part of your meals and for snacks, rather than all of the ones you need to cut back on.  Eating is meant to be enjoyed and all foods have a place in a balanced diet. There is no such thing as good or bad foods, only good or bad eating habits — save ‘comfort foods’ for an occasional treat with your fiancé or bridesmaids, not an everyday snack.

How to get a diet plan for free

Recently, nutrition and specifically nutraceuticals have been in the news for a while. A Frost Sullivan report covered in the Economic Times said the industry would grow from $1,480 million in 2011 to $2,731 million in 2016. Two days ago, the Ayurvedic products company, Himalaya, launched its own line of nutraceuticals.

Philipe Haydon, CEO-Pharmaceutical division, Himalaya Herbal Healthcare, said, “We hope to have nine products in the nutraceutical space in the next five years, and it will contribute Rs 250-300 crore in revenue for the company.” The company known for its herbal healthcare products will be launching two more products within the next eight months to cater to adults and expecting mothers. Himalaya also hopes to add nutrition biscuits as well as cereal bars to help people get their daily dose of nutrition.

With the entry of Himalaya, competition is increasing in this space; Abott has Pediasure, British Biologicals’ has Kids Pro, and Wockhardt has Protinex Junior.

While companies are hoping to cash in on the lack of nutrition they claim exists in urban homes, Ryan Fernando, Director, Qua Nutrition, hopes otherwise.

Fernando used to be part of a nutraceutical company called Nutralife, and says, “In the ten years I’ve worked in this space, people always came to me asking for help to get their basic nutrition right.” Since he could not address this problem while he was part of a large organisation, Fernando opened his own brand of nutrition clinics in Bangalore.

He hopes to help people get their basic nutrition right and has priced one of his many nutrition plans at Rs 2,000. Fernando hopes to be cost effective as well as result oriented in getting people healthy and fit.

While he tries to go the mass route, established nutritionists, like Rujuta Diwekar, charge anywhere between Rs 15,000 – Rs 3,00,000 to get people fit. But can you get a diet plan for free?

Here are three things I found that work in the Indian context.

Step 1: Get a balanced diet

Lisa Sarah John is a Bangalore-based dietician, who has advised people like Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, V.V.S. Laxman, and V. Sehwag. On her website, she gives readers an easy break up of what a balanced Indian diet should look like. For a South Indian, like me, I found it refreshing because she did not tell me to cut out rice or turn vegetarian, and it sounded very practical to implement. For more, you can go here.

Step 2: Put checks and balances to see if you are keeping the diet

I must confess I found it hard to keep track of my diet so I went to lifemojo.com. They offer an online service for free, where you can track you food, fitness plans like walking or jogging. It also makes you set a goal to see if you are moving towards it. After a week, you weigh yourself and it generates a report to show you your progress.

Step 3: Exercise and don’t look at it like a chore

There is a video I watched, which was circulated internally in our group. It was conceived and presented by Dr Mike Evans, who is a family physician at St. Michael’s Hospital and an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Toronto. He believes that there is an emerging need for ‘clinicians to become part-time “curators of the best health information for their patients’. It was the best argument to get me out of my chair and become more active in a non-forceful manner.

High Court Upholds Affordable Care Act
In a landmark ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court this week upheld nearly all of the 2010 health care reform law. The court approved even the law’s most disputed part — a requirement that nearly all Americans have health insurance. Chief Justice John Roberts, a conservative, joined four liberal justices in the 5-4 ruling. They found that the mandate to buy insurance is allowed under the government’s taxing powers. The Obama administration also sought approval based on the power to regulate interstate commerce. But the court rejected that argument. The majority did reject one provision of the Affordable Care Act. That section dealt with the expansion of the Medicaid program. This is one major way that the law expands insurance coverage. The court said that the expansion can proceed. But it said the federal government cannot cut off all Medicaid funding for states that do not agree to expand the program. Some parts of the law have already taken effect. For example, family insurance plans now cover children through age 26. In 2014, people will have to have insurance or pay a tax penalty. The Associated Press wrote about the ruling.

FDA Approves New Weight-Loss Drug
U.S. drug regulators this week approved the first new prescription diet pill in 13 years. The drug, lorcaserin (Belviq), was rejected in 2010. At the time, scientists raised concerns about tumors in animals that received the drug in lab studies. But the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reversed that decision this week. Arena Pharmaceuticals, maker of Belviq, supplied more safety data earlier this year. The FDA decided there was little risk of tumors in people. The agency approved the drug for adults who are obese, or overweight with a related medical condition. In studies of Belviq, people lost about 3% to 3.7% of their body weight in a year. Nearly half of those without diabetes lost at least 5% of their weight. Side effects have been a problem with diet drugs. Some people taking Belviq had depression, migraine or memory lapses. But the FDA said Belviq “does not appear to activate” a chemical pathway known to cause heart valve defects. A risk of valve problems was reported in 1997 for the combination of two drugs known as fen-phen. Many doctors had prescribed the drugs for weight loss. The Associated Press wrote about the FDA decision.

Doctors Urged to Do More for Obese Patients
Doctors should calculate body mass index (BMI) for their patients, an expert group said this week. And those who are obese should be referred to intensive weight-loss programs, the group said. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force published the new guidelines. The task force is an independent group that advises doctors and the U.S. government on preventive care. The group has recommended BMI screening before. But now it is urging doctors to refer patients to programs that have been shown to be the most effective for weight loss. These programs should include several features, the task force said. It recommends a structured weight loss program that includes telephone and/or face-to-face meetings with a counselor. The program should set realistic weight loss goals, such as 5% of body weight. Counselors should figure out what problems are keeping people from meeting their goals. People should make time for fitness in their daily routine, and record their exercise and foods they eat. The Associated Press wrote about the new guidelines.

Reactions Common in Kids with Food Allergies
Even when parents know a child has a food allergy and what foods to avoid, allergic reactions often occur, a study published this week finds. The study included 512 preschool children. All of them had been diagnosed with or were at risk for a food allergy. They were allergic to milk, eggs or peanuts. Parents were counseled often about avoiding the problem foods. Yet in the 3 years of the study 72% of the children had an allergic reaction. About 53% had 2 or more reactions. In about half of the cases, the parent gave the child a problem food by accident. In other cases, the food came from a caregiver, a grandparent, another child or a teacher. Only 30% were treated with the medicine epinephrine when that was appropriate, the study found. Many caregivers were afraid of side effects or not sure that the medicine was needed. The journal Pediatrics published the study. USA Today wrote about it.

Under Right Conditions, Fertility Treatment Can Equal Natural Conception Rates …

By Jenifer Goodwin
HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, June 27 (HealthDay News) — With enough cycles and the right egg and age of a woman, the chances of in vitro fertilization resulting in a baby approaches that of natural conception, a large new study finds.

A woman’s age is the best predictor of whether in vitro fertilization will result in a baby, with women under age 34 having the greatest chances of success. But older women can largely overcome poorer odds by using donor eggs from a younger woman, according to the research.

Those are among the findings of a massive study on in vitro fertilization that, while offering few surprises, provides what experts say is the most detailed, nuanced look at who is likely to be successful using assisted reproductive technology.

“What this study does is look at a woman’s chances of conception based on adding all cycles together and taking into account her age, the diagnosis that brought her in for fertility treatments, whether there were additional embryos [preserved] and the stage the embryos were transferred,” said lead study author Barbara Luke, professor and epidemiologist at Michigan State University in East Lansing. “When women come in for treatment, there isn’t a simple answer about their chances of conception. There are a lot of factors to be taken into consideration.”

For example, after the third treatment cycle, women aged 31 and younger had a 63 percent to 75 percent chance of ending up with a baby, while women 41 or 42 using their own egg had a 19 percent to 28 percent chance. Those 43 or older had a 7 percent to 11 percent chance.

When donor eggs were used, the rates were much higher — 60 percent and 80 percent, respectively, for all ages.

“If you use a younger egg, you will vastly improve the chances of conception,” Luke said.

In other findings: The chances of getting pregnant were higher when physicians transferred a “blastocyst embryo” (an embryo that is five to six days old) instead of a “cleavage embryo” (one that is two to three days old). At the third cycle, live-birth rates were 52 percent to 81 percent for blastocyst embryos and 43 percent to 65 percent for cleavage embryos.

The study, published in the June 27 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, looked at data on nearly 250,000 women who underwent 471,000 in vitro fertilization cycles from 2004 to 2009 at approximately 400 clinics. The treatments resulted in 141,000 babies. The data was from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology Clinic Outcome Reporting System.

Rather than look at the likelihood of success per cycle, the researchers were able to track women over several years to determine their cumulative rates of success — that is how likely they were to get pregnant and carry a baby to term on subsequent in vitro fertilization cycles if their first, second or even third cycle was unsuccessful.

Many women quit after one or two cycles, often because of stress, discouragement or finances. One cycle of in vitro fertilization costs approximately $10,000 to $12,000. The study findings, which included women who had up to seven or more cycles, suggested some may be giving up too soon, Luke said.

About 25 percent of women quit after the first cycle, and about one-third of the remainder quit after two cycles, Luke said.

“One of the messages to take away from this is to think about infertility treatment as a course of treatment that, for most women, will take more than one cycle,” she said. “This is showing your success rate may be right around the corner. One more try may do it.”

By the same token, women 40 and older should take a hard look at their odds and perhaps consider a donor egg more quickly, she added.

The new study also looked at infertility diagnoses that could influence chances of success. Having a low number of eggs or a diagnosis of diminished ovarian reserve was associated with lower odds of a live birth. Uterine factors — such as fibroids, endometriosis or adhesions on the uterus — also were associated with a markedly lower success rate.

Other factors, such as male infertility, polycystic ovarian syndrome and tubal factor infertility, had less of an impact, the study found.
