What Can We Learn From Today Show Nutritionist Joy Bauer’s Weight-Loss …

Nutritionist Joy Bauer recently invited three of her all-time weight-loss superstars onto The Today Show to celebrate the release of her new book, The Joy Fit Club: Cookbook, Diet Plan and Inspiration. I happen to be featured in the book — along with many other successful dieters who have appeared on The Today Show as part of the Joy Fit Club, which includes “real life” people who have each lost over 100 pounds or more (all without fads, gimmicks or surgery).

Along with motivational and inspirational stories from many Joy Fit Club members, this new book also features recipes from the successful dieters featured in the book, as well as recipes, tips and menu plans from Ms. Bauer, herself. (And no, this is not a paid endorsement — none of us Joy Fit Club members who participated in the book received any compensation and instead contributed our stories a in hopes of inspiring others who may be facing the battle of the bulge.)

Although each of us featured in the book embarked on our own individual journeys to lose the weight and keep it off, there are a few common threads that each of us share. We all had issues with our weight, we all dieted, we all embraced exercise programs and each of us also tackled our lifestyles by making significant changes in the way we live our lives on a daily basis.

2012-04-26-greggmcbridetodayshowdiet1.JPG

Ms. Bauer, who has been a longtime champion of successful dieters, points out that dieting and losing weight is 50 percent attitude. And thus, she suggests a couple essential (and common) steps for anyone who wants to win at the losing game:

1) Find A Meaningful Reason To Lose The Weight
Ms. Bauer points out that this usually entails an “A-ha!” moment. She notes that most of her Joy Fit Club members had a health scare or wanted to be around for kids or grandkids — or they just finally wanted to feel more comfortable in their own skin. But whatever the reason, there was a reason. So it’s a matter with getting in touch with what might motivate you, individually.

2) Set Up A Tracking System
“There’s nothing more encouraging that watching a downward trend,” reports Ms. Bauer. She suggests setting up a computer spreadsheet or graphing your own chart on paper in order to chart your pounds-lost progress. She also advocates the use of a flexible tape measure to record the inches lost — along with keeping a record of your food, as you’re more likely to be accountable for what you eat when documenting everything on paper.

3) Make Short-Term Goals and Forgive Slip-Ups
Ms. Bauer reminds everyone she counsels that no one gains weight from a few slices of pizza or one single meal of pasta or a similarly rich food. She notes that it’s important to prevent a temporary setback from turning into an all-out binge. Instead, Ms. Bauer suggests shaking off the eating slip-up and immediately getting back on track, noting that when people forgive themselves for these kinds of slip-ups, they’re not only going to finally lose their excess weight, they’re going to keep it off.

While recently appearing on The Today Show to help promote Ms. Bauer’s new book, all three of us featured “weight-loss superstars” shared our own ideas for successfully losing weight and keeping it off.

Rosie Coates (who lost 107 pounds) confessed that she’d tried to diet for 18 years before she finally “got” it and lost the weight. She encourages any dieter who has tried and failed to try again. The next time just might be the time.

Jamie Francisco (who lost 105 pounds) was asked about keeping the weight off and noted that it was more difficult than actively losing the weight in the first place. Ms. Francisco said that she lost the weight by gradually removing different foods and ramping up the exercise.

As for myself (who has lost 275 pounds), I shared that you can’t lose sight of keeping off the weight and that it’s something you must think about every day. I also noted that the minute you embrace the work involved, it starts to work for you. There’s nothing wrong with being committed. No, you can’t let your guard down, but the end results are worth it.

What are your “common thread tips” that you’ve achieved success with? I’d love for you to share them in comments below. Or even share some of the challenges you’re facing that might be keeping you from achieving your weight-loss goals. After all, we’re all in this together. And I know for a fact that there’s a “weight-loss superstar” waiting to be discovered in you.

Bronwyn Taylor: British powerlifting champion, 16, reveals her six meal a day …

  • Teenager eats 2,300 calories every day to fuel grueling training regime
  • ‘I have never scrimped on food,’ says mother Florence

By
Sadie Whitelocks

11:55 EST, 1 May 2012

She’s Britain’s strongest schoolgirl, with three British powerlifting titles under her belt.

And now Bronwyn Taylor, 16, from Inverness in Scotland, has revealed the gut-busting diet she follows to in a bid to become a world class champion.

The teenager consumes 2,300 calories per day, making her way through 14 eggs, two dozen bowls of porridge, 14 tins
of tuna, and mountains of muesli and cheese every week.

Healthy diet: Bronwyn with some of the food that makes up her daily six meals a day

She had initially planned on becoming a
hairdresser, but after taking up powerlifting a year ago her athletic
potential went from strength to strength.

Just 12 months after taking up the
sport, Bronwyn – who is 5
feet 10 ins and weighs 11 stone 4lb – has stunned her friends and family by breaking three
British records at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Federation
Championships, lifting twice her own body weight.

The fifth year student is now gearing up for the World Bench Press
Championships which take place next month, three days after her final English exam.

She said: ‘I do eat a lot of food but I’m not a calorie counter because it is all very healthy.

Packing some punch: Bronwyn Taylor, Britain’s strongest schoolgirl, only took up powerlifting a year ago

‘My friends at school thought it was a
little strange at first but now they are used to it. They think they will end up looking like the Incredible Hulk.’

Bronwyn was inspired to take up powerlifting – which uses a different
technique to weightlifting – while training in boxing and karate in
December 2010.

She began to hit the gym with her dad
Andrew, 43, who runs a removals firm, and with his help quickly
discovered her talent for the sport.

BRONWYN’S DAILY MEAL PLAN

Meal 1 - 7am – Bowl of porridge and 2 hard boiled egg whites

Meal 2 – mid morning school snack – Tin of tuna and brown rice from the school canteen

Meal 3 – lunch – chicken breast, broccoli, green beans and some fruit

Meal 4 – mid afternoon – tin of tuna and oatcakes, sugar free jelly

Meal 5 – dinner – white fish with salad and a baked potato

Meal 6 – just before bed – diet hot chocolate and sugar free muesli

She broke the Scottish record in
October by lifting a combined weight of 260 kilograms (40 st 13lbs) at
the Scottish Open championships in Glasgow.

The record did not count as a British record because it was not completed at the British competition.

Both her British and Scottish
record-breaking weights are compiled from three lifts, the bench press,
the deadlift and the squat, standard practice for measuring record
attempts in the sport.

As well as taking on her first
international contest she also plans to turn her hand to the Olympic
sport of weightlifting to compete in the 2016 games.

Bronwyn’s mother Florence added: ‘The whole aim is to improve. I stock the fridge up once a week and she eats what she wants to eat.

‘She needs the energy because in the
international competition she will be up against girls who are almost
two years older than her but I am optimistic she can do it.

“I have never scrimped on food and as a
family we eat quite a lot because Bronwyn’s dad is very active at the
gym and her younger brother Cosmo, who is 12, is starting to get into it
as well.’

The World Bench Press Championships will take place between May 21 and May 26 in the Czech Republic.

On the pull: Bronwyn demonstrates her power hauling a transit van

Here’s what other readers have said. Why not add your thoughts,

When did Mercedes make transit vans?

It’s really sad to see so many negative comments on here, this young girl has achieved incredible success thanks to her determination and drive, we should be celebrating her success not making stupid comments about her looks!

Good for her – she looks really healthy. She’s got great skin . . . but I think she should be careful, eating that much tuna. She could get mercury poisoning.

She should be eating a LOT more than 2300 calories a day!
She is active, tall and fairly heavy (in muscle, which also increases metabolism)
Im short, lazy and not muscly and thats how much i maintain on (also a girl)
Dont know why they are saying its a lot of food?! Shes a teenage girl, with her height, weight and activity level she is actually under eating.

Good on her for being into something other than looking in the mirror.

That’s like saying humans shouldn’t participate in any strenuous activity until they’ve finished growing.

I predicted correctly yesterday, a slow and steady drip drip of boring Olympics articles appearing in showbiz section. I will be taking my summer break from DM very soon before it’s saturated with this jumped up sports day.
- Lalli, England——-Well, it would have been a great prediciton, I’m sure, if powerlifting were an Olympic event – but it isn’t. I could have predicted correctly yesterday, a slow and steady drip of bores like you who probably couldn’t lift themselves of the sofa let alone lift a bar with some serious weight on it.

I would ……..cmon lads, you know what Im talking about, and probably agree with me.

The child could do with a more varied diet, NOT that her’s is terrible or even bad. No,not’t'all, in fact it’s fairly good… but where are the legumes and nuts??? the berries?? pasta (that’s an entire food group in and of itself in our household! :) ?? And only 2,300 cal a day?? I eat over 3,200 cal daily and I also exercise 5-6 days/week very vigorously and with great enthusiasm :) . Perhaps I’m/we’re doing way more cardio than she is. Ummmm, oh well, something should be checked out here. I’m more than twice her age and I can’t figure how 2,300 cal can meet her needs, given all that activity. Wonderful gal and I hope she does very well.

At least she’s eating.

Dr. G’s Weight Loss & Wellness Becomes Weight Loss Solution for Plastic …

  • Email a friend

Take Shape Plastic Surgery Center

“We want patients to lose a safe amount of weight in a reasonable period of time, so they can have their desired procedure”, says Valery Adkins the owner of Dr. G’s in Plantation.

Plantation, FL (PRWEB) April 30, 2012

Dr. G’s Weight Loss Wellness has become the premier weight loss solution for plastic surgeons across South Florida. Dr. G’s Weight Loss Wellness of Plantation has teamed up with Dr. Sassani, owner of Take Shape Plastic Surgery, P.A., to offer a safe and effective weight loss program to patients who must lose weight prior to undergoing certain procedures. Many people walk into plastic surgery offices expecting to have excess weight removed via liposuction, tummy tucks and arm lifts. However, it is not uncommon for the plastic surgeon to direct them to lose weight before the surgery in order for the procedure to be performed properly. Often, patients leave with the best of intentions for losing the weight, but never return because they are unable to reach their goal weight. Some patients lose weight and then gain it back again after using ineffective dieting plans that either lose weight too quickly or use methods that are unsustainable for the long-term.

This is where Dr. G’s Weight Loss Wellness comes in, an effective weight loss solution over for the last 18 years. Dr. G’s Weight Loss Wellness is a doctor-supervised program that enables patients to lose approximately 7-10 lbs per month. This amount of weight loss isn’t too fast or too slow. Dr. G’s program helps patients lose 2-3 pounds per week allowing the patient to safely and effectively reach their goal weight in a healthy and timely manner.

“We want patients to lose a safe amount of weight in a reasonable period of time, so they can have their desired procedure,” stated Valery Adkins, owner of Dr. G’s in Plantation.

Take Shape Plastic Surgery, P.A. is approximately 10 minutes from Dr. G’s Weight Loss Wellness clinic in Plantation, Florida. The two clinics are very complimentary to each other. Dr. Sassani is the Medical Director at Take Shape Plastic Surgery, P.A. He has been Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, since November 1997. He is university-trained in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and has additional specialized fellowship training.

After graduating with Highest Honors from Rutgers University, Dr. Sassani obtained his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. His residency training in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery was at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He then went on to complete post-residency fellowships. These included a Hand Surgery Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, a Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Fellowship at the University of Miami, and a Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship with the renowned doctors. Baker, Gordon and Stuzin in Miami.

Dr. Sassani’s particular areas of interest and expertise are cosmetic surgery of the face, plastic surgery of the breast (enlargement, reduction and reconstruction), body contour surgery (liposuction and tummy tucks) and laser skin resurfacing. His reconstructive interests and expertise include reconstruction after facial trauma, reconstruction after cancer surgery, burn reconstruction, and hand surgery.

Whether the patients’ consultation is for a non-surgical treatment, like Botox, Juvederm, Radiesse, Sculptra, ASCLERA, or PIXEL Laser, or a more involved cosmetic or reconstructive procedure, they can be assured that Dr. Sassani and his team posses the skills, the training, and the aesthetic eye to ensure the desired cosmetic result becomes a reality. They also welcome visits to their Medicare-certified, state licensed, nationally accredited, ambulatory surgical center located at 4161 NW 5th Street, Suite 100, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33317. Call 954-585-3800 to schedule a consultation and tour of the facility.

To be successful, young athletes need good nutrition

T-ball, soccer, softball and tennis are in full swing, and young athletes need nutritious foods for top-notch performance./pp “In order to properly fuel their bodies for sport, youngsters need to eat a daily diet that focuses on adequate calories, particularly in the form of carbohydrates, to support exercise and growth, and adequate protein,” registered dietitian Mary Wilson said./pp A board-certified specialist in sports dietetics and director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics at Eastern Kentucky University, Wilson recommends that parents follow the 2010 dietary guidelines for Americans and Myplate.gov for feeding their active youngsters./pp The best foods for young athletes are: carbohydrates from whole grains (breads, cereals, pasta, brown rice), fruits, vegetables, and low-fat milk and yogurt; and protein from legumes, nuts, seeds, low-fat milk, yogurt and cheese, poultry and lean cuts of meat./pp Registered dietitian Jill Kindy, the mother of two young athletes ages 9 and 11, said planning is important in providing healthful foods for young people. Kindy, health education coordinator at the University of Kentucky, recommends keeping non-perishables such as granola bars, cheese and crackers, dry cereal or trail mix in the car, so they’re available to eat when kids are heading to the park after school./pp “We sometimes travel with an insulated bag/cooler with an ice pack, so we can have items like string cheese or cold drinks. This way, you won’t get stuck running through the drive-through and ending up with a high-fat, high-calorie choice. If you do end up at fast food, go for the grilled chicken, a sub sandwich, and apples and fruit instead of french fries.”/pp Kindy, who also is a sports dietetics specialist, suggests that youngsters eat something that is mainly carbohydrates before a game or practice that lasts longer than an hour. During a lengthy activity, children can eat fruit, bagels or granola bars, and they can drink sports drinks./pp “After strenuous activity, it’s good to replenish losses shortly after the competition or practice ends – like within 30 to 60 minutes,” Kindy said. This meal or snack should contain some carbohydrates and some protein. Snacks can be chocolate milk or peanut butter crackers or low-fat cottage cheese and fruit./pp For a meal after the game, youngsters should eat lean protein, starch and vegetables, with the plate being about three-fourths rice or pasta and vegetables or fruit, and one-fourth protein./pp “If your plate looked like a clock, from about 12 to 4 should be protein (lean meat, chicken, fish) and from 4 back around to 12 should be starch and vegetables,” she said. “Also, remember to drink enough to replenish fluid losses.”/pp Consuming adequate fluids is important to prevent dehydration, Wilson said./pp “Urine color can be a convenient way to monitor hydration,” Wilson said. “Urine should be pale yellow. Dark urine indicates dehydration and shows that an athlete needs to drink more fluids before, during and after exercise./pp One of the best insurance policies for adequate nutrition during competition is eating well on a daily basis during the season, Wilson said./pp “Parents can help by ensuring that these healthful foods are readily available, helping kids learn to plan ahead to fuel workouts and competitions, and, of course, serving as a role model for children with respect to nutrition,” she said./pp Just as important as what active youngsters eat is when they eat./pp “Meals and snacks should be spaced throughout the day, so energy is available to muscles when needed,” she said. An athlete who trains or practices at 4 p.m. should eat breakfast, lunch, and possibly a light snack before, followed by dinner after the activity./pp For a 6:30 p.m. practice, the athlete should eat breakfast, lunch and a light dinner or substantial snack about 4 or 5 p.m., followed by a substantial snack or light meal after practice, she said./pp As the season continues, the young athletes will head into tournaments that can last all day. “Athletes should stick to familiar, well-tolerated foods, focusing on carbohydrates and lean protein on the day of competition,” Wilson said. “Most exercisers can eat a snack one to three hours prior to a competition. This pre-competition meal/snack is especially important for morning competitions.”/pp For daylong competitions, planning is crucial to ensure that adequate carbohydrates and protein are available during the event. Good choices to have on hand include fresh and dried fruit, crackers, yogurt, sandwiches, cheese, granola bars and peanut butter./pp Wilson advises youngsters to stick to the normal sports diet (plenty of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat milk products and lean protein) during the week before and day before competition./pp Kindy said the pre-game meal “cannot undo a bunch of unhealthy eating that you do the rest of the week. If you eat well all the time, then you will be practicing at your optimum, which ultimately should mean that you are competing at your optimum.”/pp /pp A new book focuses on nutrition for school-age children. “Sports Nutrition for Young Athletes” by Anita Bean is written for those engaged in athletics, whether at the recreational level or in serious competition./pp “There’s no doubt that what children eat affects their health as well as their performance in sport,” Bean writes in the introduction. “If they eat a poor-quality diet, then they not only risk illness but they will not be able to train and compete to the best of their ability. But if they eat a healthy diet that provides the correct amount of energy and nutrients, then they will enjoy better health and improved performance in their sport./pp “It’s not essential that young athletes eat a perfect diet all the time, but provided they get it right about 80 percent of the time, then they will have a great chance of putting in their best performance.”/pp Here are some snack recipes that will provide energy for the young athlete./pp /pp HONEY ENERGY BAR/pp 2/3 cup honey/pp 3/4 cup chunky peanut butter/pp 4 cups granola mix/pp In 4-cup microwave-safe container, microwave honey at high 2 to 3 minutes, or until honey boils. Stir in peanut butter; mix until thoroughly blended. Place granola in large bowl. Pour honey mixture over granola and combine thoroughly. Press firmly into 13- by 9- by 2-inch baking pan. Let stand until firm. Cut into bars./pp Makes 36 bars./pp From The National Honey Board/pp STRAWBERRY BARS/pp 1 cup flour/pp 1 cup rolled oats/pp 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened/pp 1/3 cup light brown sugar/pp 1/4 teaspoon baking powder/pp 1/8 teaspoon salt/pp 3/4 cup strawberry jam/pp Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, mix everything together except strawberry jam. Measure out 2 cups of the mixture. Leave the rest in the bowl, and set it aside./pp Press the 2 cups of the mixture into the bottom of a square (8- by 8-inch) pan coated with shortening or non-stick spray. You may use your hands or a spoon. Make sure you cover the entire bottom of the pan./pp Using a large spoon, spread strawberry jam on top of the mixture in the pan. Take the mixture that was left in the bowl and spread it over strawberry jam. Press down lightly. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove pan from oven, and allow it to cool at least 15 minutes. Cut the bars into 12 squares./pp Makes 12 servings./pp From Kidshealth.org

The Best Foods For Healthy Skin

Skin Foods

By Mike Roussell, Ph.D. for Shape.com

Q: Are there certain foods that I can eat to improve my complexion?

A: Yes, with a few simple diet tweaks, you can help reduce signs of aging such as wrinkles, dryness and thinning skin. The saying “you are what you eat” is especially true when it comes to your skin. Here are the best foods to incorporate into your diet to improve your complexion:

1. Flax And Flaxseed Oil
Flax is a treasure trove for alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fat that’s a key component of the lubricating layer that keeps skin moist and supple. In fact, low intake of ALA can lead to dermatitis (red, itchy skin).

More from Shape.com:
10 Foods That Cause Inflammation
Beauty Secrets From The People Who Know Best
High-Tech Beauty Products Worth Every Penny

One great way to get more flaxseed oil in your diet: Try Nutrition Garlic Chili Organic Flax Seed Oil as an alternative to olive oil for salad dressing; coincidentally olive oil has also been shown to be good for your skin so alternate between the two oils for maximum results.

2. Red Bell Peppers And Carrots
These two vegetables are excellent sources of vitamin C, which is a key player in the production of collagen (which keeps skin firm) and protects cells from damage caused by free radicals (which can lead to premature wrinkles).

Red bell peppers and carrots are also two of the most convenient healthy snack foods. Cut them into strips and take them with you when you’re on the go.

3. Lean Beef Or Poultry
Research shows that women with more wrinkles are more likely to have lower intakes of protein. And still more research shows that the skin of older women with lower protein intakes is more prone to cracking, tearing and breaking.

Your prevention plan: Aim to have a protein containing food (eggs, lean beef, poultry, edamame beans, etc.) at each of your meals to ensure optimal protein levels in your diet — and supple skin.

These three additions to your diet are simple, but the effects are profound. Making just one of the above changes can reduce the likelihood of wrinkles by 10 percent, of thinning skin by 25 percent or of dryness by 20 percent, according to a 2007 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Raspberry Ketone Diet Body Lotion Now Available From HCG Diet Plan

  • Email a friend

Beth Golden, PhD, ND,
The HCG Diet Expert
Formulator, Educator, Author

Our Raspberry Ketone Body Lotion is weight loss, anti-oxidant and anti-aging, all in one, says Beth Golden, PhD, ND, Formulator

St. Petersburg, Fl (PRWEB) April 30, 2012

HCG Diet Plan, the leading resource for HCG Diet products, HCG Diet Coaching and HCG Diet training Health Care Professionals, now offers Raspberry Ketone Body Lotion by Golden Essence®. As found in clinical studies and as seen on Dr. Oz, Raspberry Ketones have been shown to regulate Adiponectin, a natural hormone found at higher levels in thin people.(1)(2)

As recently seen on Dr. Oz, natural Raspberry Ketones are being touted as a “weight loss miracle” and recommended to support weight loss. In 2004, clinical researchers used mice to test the outcome of eating a high fat diet both with and without Raspberry Ketone. The mice that were fed the high fat diet along with Raspberry Ketone showed reduced body fat and increased resting metabolism. The mice that were fed a high fat diet without Raspberry Ketone did not produce the same results.(2)

Researchers in Japan and Korea have shown that Raspberry Ketone regulates the hormone Adiponectin, as well as helps breakdown fat and turn fat into energy. Adiponectin is a hormone that helps the body to act thin and creates a boost in metabolism. In turn, the fat within cells gets broken up more effectively, helping the body burn fat faster and more efficiently. As people gain weight, Adiponectin’s ability to function is reduced which decreases the breakdown of fat and increases the storage of fat in the cells.

In order to process enough Raspberry Ketone to help the body burn excess fat, studies show that ninety (90) pounds of raspberries would need to be consumed. The recommended dosage for the Raspberry Ketone Body Lotion is a single application twice a day. Considered safe for everyday use and a registered Campaign for Safe Cosmetics product, the Raspberry Ketone Body Lotion is a paraben free, oil free body lotion void of toxic paraben preservatives and synthetic fragrances. In addition, natural Raspberry Ketones has also been shown to increase skin’s elasticity which reduces the appearance of fine line and wrinkles.(3)

“Our Raspberry Ketone Body Lotion is weight loss, anti-oxidant and anti-aging, all in one,” says Beth Golden, PhD, ND, Formulator.

The Raspberry Ketone Body Lotion, as well as the extensive paraben free, oil free HCG Diet Skincare line by Golden Essence, is available through HCGDietPlan.com.

Jenny Craig Launches New Ambassadors: Dame Edna & Barry Humphries

New Jenny Craig ambassadors, Dame Edna Everage and her adoring manager Barry Humphries get serious about their health and pledge to shed 33lbs each with Jenny Craig.

(PRWEB UK) 1 May 2012

National Treasure Dame Edna Everage and her adoring manager Barry Humphries get serious about their health and pledge to shed 33lbs each with Jenny Craig and their healthy diet plans. With the megastar and her manager about to embark on their farewell tour, Edna states the dramatic change is necessary in the interests of their health and, as role models, the health of their public.

“Possums, Barry and I both appreciate the influence we have over our adoring public. Just like the Beckhams, people follow and copy our every move. And lately, well let’s be brutally honest, we’ve let ourselves go and haven’t been good role models. I have a wardrobe full of breathtaking gowns but I have to hold my breath to wear them …only three gowns fit me these days. When I’m on stage, I have to suck in my tummy because I fear my dress will burst at the seams. Just like my dear friend Mel B, I’m hoping to get my pre-baby body back! While that was many years ago the outcome should be the same with the help of Jenny Craig.

“I’ve always had a nice little double chin, but recently it’s turned into a quadruple chin. I want to live a long time and I am ready for Jenny CraigG,” said Edna.

Barry Humphries also worries about Edna’s weight. “We were in London recently and Edna’s looks were savaged by one critic in particular who described her as rather ‘tubby’. Well, that was a wake up call for both of us, especially with our so-called “farewell” tour, ‘Eat, Pray, Laugh’, about to start in June.

“We want everyone to rally behind us on Jenny’s ‘Edna Forever’ campaign. Edna is a legend; she deserves the very best. We may be approaching our early twilight years – or as I like to call them, our ‘after lunch years’ – but Edna has some sage advice to impart regardless of your age,” said Mr Humphries.

Barry also admits he has his own problems with food and will be supporting Edna and encouraging all men to think about their health.

“I have a problem with food and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Don’t forget, you can get help. There’s no shame in a man getting help. It’s a shame if you don’t!“

Diet books arrive just in time for swimsuit season

If you want to slim down this summer, there are many different ways to drop a few pounds or maybe even a size or two. The authors of several new diet books share their weight-loss insights.

‘S.A.S.S. Yourself Slim’

By Cynthia Sass (HarperOne, $15.99)

The book offers a four-meal-a-day plan and includes a mandatory daily dark chocolate. Sass, a registered dietitian with master’s degrees in nutrition science and public health, is a consultant to hockey’s New York Rangers and baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays.

Dieters’ biggest mistake: “Under-eating. Starvation or extreme diets make you feel lousy and backfire, prolonging the roller-coaster ride of weight ups and downs. If you want to lose body fat, keep it off, and feel great every step of the way, you have to think of your diet as a blueprint for building the body you want. … The right raw materials have to show up to the construction site.”

‘Ultimate Volumetrics Diet’

By Barbara Rolls with Mindy Hermann (William Morrow, $27.50)

The book combines research with solutions to give readers a guide to managing weight. Rolls is a professor of nutritional sciences at Pennsylvania State University and has written six books, including The Volumetrics Weight Control Plan.

Best advice: “The way you eat each day should provide you with the nutrients and calories for both good health and a healthy weight.”

Dieters’ biggest mistake: “Many dieters try to give up favorite foods forever, and that undermines the long-term sustainability of any diet.”

‘DASH Diet for Weight Loss’

By Thomas Moore and Megan Murphy with Mark Jenkins (Free Press, $26)

It is based on the highly touted DASH Diet. Moore is a professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and led the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension Diet Research Group, which developed the diet.

Best advice: “A healthy rate of weight loss is about 1 to 2 pounds a week. Accept the fact that, if you want to lose 40 pounds, it will take you 5 months. … It’s important for you to pick an eating plan that allows you to eat foods that you really enjoy.”

Dieters’ biggest mistake: “Setting huge, unattainable goals and then getting discouraged when they fail.”

‘Weight Loss Boss’

By David Kirchhoff (Rodale Books, $25.99)

It includes the author’s personal weight struggles, as well as insights from Weight Watchers members. Kirchhoff is president and CEO of Weight Watchers.

Best advice: “Stop thinking like dieters. Start thinking like people who are trying to create happy and healthier habits that they can keep for life.”

Dieters’ biggest mistake: “Thinking that the key to losing weight is two months of deprivation …. The foods you are eating while you are losing weight should be the foods you can see yourself eating for the rest of your life. Focus on finding foods you can love that will love you right back.”

‘The Blood Sugar Solution’

By Mark Hyman (Little, Brown and Company $27.99)

This is a six-week plan to reverse diabetes and obesity, referred to as diabesity. Hyman is chairman of the Institute for Functional Medicine and the author of UltraMetabolism.

Best advice: “Eat real food — nothing processed or prepared. Eat protein for breakfast such as eggs, nut butters, protein shake. Don’t drink your calories: no juices, sodas, sport drinks. Have breakfast every day and have three meals and two snacks.”

Dieters’ biggest mistake: “Eating low-fat foods. Skipping meals to lose weight. Counting calories, fat grams or carbs instead of focusing on quality and fresh whole food.”

‘The Starch Solution’

By John McDougall with Mary McDougall (Rodale Books, $26.99)

The program encourages people to solve health problems, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and arthritis, using diets based on rice, corn and potatoes. John McDougall is a physician who helps people overcome illnesses with diet plans.

Best advice: “Eat more starch. Avoid fats and oils. The fat you eat is the fat you wear. … Appetite-satisfying bread, rice, corn, potatoes and beans should replace fattening oils, cheeses and pork chops.”

Dieters’ biggest mistake: “Believing the fault is their own. They must stop believing there is something psychologically wrong with them.”

‘The Petite Advantage Diet’

By Jim Karas (HarperOne, $25.99)

The book is designed for women who are 5-foot-4 and under. Karas is a best-selling diet book author who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.

Best advice: “If you are 5-foot-4 or under, it may be helpful to think of your body like a baby pool, which fills up with water fast. For a taller woman, 40 calories is nothing, but for a petite woman, just 40 extra calories a day turns into 4.2 pounds a year, 42 pounds over a decade.”

Dieters’ biggest mistake: “Performing classic cardio (running, biking). Instead, do interval strength training (to) raise metabolism and give you the long, lean look you desire.”

Call Dr. G’s Weight Loss Wellness at 954-423-1495 to schedule a free consultation to obtain your goal weight before your plastic surgery at Take Shape Plastic Surgery, P.A.
