Jessica Simpson Weight-Loss Plan: New Mom Reveals How She’ll Slim Down Post …

Jessica Simpson Weight-Loss PlanJon Kopaloff, FilmMagic

It’s only been four weeks since Jessica Simpson gave birth to her nearly 10-pound baby, Maxwell Drew — but the singer is already plotting her post-pregnancy slim-down! Acknowledging her past penchant for fad and yo-yo dieting, the new Weight Watchers spokesperson revealed her plans to start making healthier lifestyle choices that she can maintain long term.

“I think anybody who’s gone through a pregnancy, after they have the baby, it’s like, ‘I need to do something about this,’” she told PEOPLE. “For me, I really want to do something that is a lifestyle, because in the past, I’ve been known to yo-yo diet.”

But apparently, Simpson was already set on slimming down — she actually signed her reported $4 million deal with Weight Watchers before she found out she was pregnant! Of course, the diet plan wen out the window when she found out she got the big baby news. “I was like, ‘I’m going to enjoy my pregnancy,’ and I did,” Jess confessed. “I ate very healthy, but I did indulge some of my cravings — and that’s okay because I know I can work it off now.”

But when it comes to shedding the baby weight, Jessica won’t measure her success by the number on the scale. “There’s not a goal weight — I just want to feel normal and not fixate on inches,” she said. “I really want to set small goals, so I’m constantly reaching goals and not looking at something so far ahead.”

New York Plans to Ban Sale of Big Sizes of Sugary Drinks

The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.

The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.

“Obesity is a nationwide problem, and all over the United States, public health officials are wringing their hands saying, ‘Oh, this is terrible,’ ” Mr. Bloomberg said in an interview on Wednesday in the Governor’s Room at City Hall.

“New York City is not about wringing your hands; it’s about doing something,” he said. “I think that’s what the public wants the mayor to do.”

A spokesman for the New York City Beverage Association, an arm of the soda industry’s national trade group, criticized the city’s proposal on Wednesday. The industry has clashed repeatedly with the city’s health department, saying it has unfairly singled out soda; industry groups have bought subway advertisements promoting their cause.

“The New York City health department’s unhealthy obsession with attacking soft drinks is again pushing them over the top,” the industry spokesman, Stefan Friedman, said. “It’s time for serious health professionals to move on and seek solutions that are going to actually curb obesity. These zealous proposals just distract from the hard work that needs to be done on this front.”

Mr. Bloomberg’s proposal requires the approval of the Board of Health, a step that is considered likely because the members are all appointed by him, and the board’s chairman is the city’s health commissioner, who joined the mayor in supporting the measure on Wednesday.

Mr. Bloomberg has made public health one of the top priorities of his lengthy tenure, and has championed a series of aggressive regulations, including bans on smoking in restaurants and parks, a prohibition against artificial trans fat in restaurant food and a requirement for health inspection grades to be posted in restaurant windows.

The measures have led to occasional derision of the mayor as Nanny Bloomberg, by those who view the restrictions as infringements on personal freedom. But many of the measures adopted in New York have become models for other cities, including restrictions on smoking and trans fats, as well as the use of graphic advertising to combat smoking and soda consumption, and the demand that chain restaurants post calorie contents next to prices.

In recent years, soda has emerged as a battleground in efforts to counter obesity. Across the nation, some school districts have banned the sale of soda in schools, and some cities have banned the sale of soda in public buildings.

In New York City, where more than half of adults are obese or overweight, Dr. Thomas Farley, the health commissioner, blames sweetened drinks for up to half of the increase in city obesity rates over the last 30 years. About a third of New Yorkers drink one or more sugary drinks a day, according to the city. Dr. Farley said the city had seen higher obesity rates in neighborhoods where soda consumption was more common.

The ban would not apply to drinks with fewer than 25 calories per 8-ounce serving, like zero-calorie Vitamin Waters and unsweetened iced teas, as well as diet sodas.

Restaurants, delis, movie theater and ballpark concessions would be affected, because they are regulated by the health department. Carts on sidewalks and in Central Park would also be included, but not vending machines or newsstands that serve only a smattering of fresh food items.

At fast-food chains, where sodas are often dispersed at self-serve fountains, restaurants would be required to hand out cup sizes of 16 ounces or less, regardless of whether a customer opts for a diet drink. But free refills — and additional drink purchases — would be allowed.

Beyond meat: Americans preoccupied with protein

Carbs? Calories? Fat? They are so very last decade. Dieters and would-be healthy eaters know the nutrient of the moment being tallied, sought and bought is protein.

Spurred by trainers, diet gurus and weight-loss plans, Americans are seeking more— and more unique — sources of protein, from almonds ground into milk and soy reshaped as pasta, to peas and whey turned into powders and shakes. And food producers are happy to oblige.

Powders and energy bars packed with 20, 30 or even more grams of protein per serving are selling briskly. Supermarket shelves once crowded with foods boasting of being high in fiber or low in fat now are jammed with claims of protein content. Yet this is happening even as Americans eat less meat, the go-to source of protein for generations.

“People are getting smarter about foods in general,” said Phil Lempert, a food marketing expert known as The Supermarket Guru. He sees higher meat prices driving people to other sources of protein, a movement that has becoming more pronounced this year.

“Longer term, I think you’re going to see people starting to look at more vegetables and different combinations to create proteins like rice and beans.”

Amanda Perry — an on-the-go mom with two jobs and a 1-year-old — is a good example. She counts on lots of protein to keep her feeling full and full of energy. But she needs it to be portable, so she often mixes protein powder with almond milk, maybe a banana and some peanut butter.

“It’s easily portable, which I think is awesome for busy people because you’re on the run,” said Perry, a 31-year-old personal trainer who owns a gym in Chelmsford, Mass., with her husband. “You can’t really take a chicken breast or a piece of steak with you if you’re going to be out for several hours.”

Red meat, a rich source of protein, is going through an especially bumpy run. Prices are up, and so are health concerns about beef and its saturated fat content. Americans are expected to consume about 15 percent less beef on a per capita basis this year compared to 2007, according to Steiner Company, an economic consultant to the food industry. Per capita consumption of all red meat and poultry is expected to be down by 10 percent over the same period.

But if forces are pushing people away from meat, health conscious Americans are simultaneously being lured to other sources of protein, such as nuts, beans, soy and seafood.

Protein has had popularity peaks before — think of the Atkins diet craze not so many years ago — though this time there are a chorus of voices touting the benefits of protein-heavy regimens like the Paleo Diet, which stresses the lean meats and wild plants eaten by our ancestors. And it’s being helped along by accumulating evidence that plant-based protein can lower cholesterol levels and have other beneficial effects.

A trip down the grocery aisle shows food makers are tuned in to this trend and happy to engage shoppers about it, from Yoplait Greek yogurts (“2X protein”) to Boca meatless lasagna (“21 g protein”) to Perdue chicken breast tenders (“excellent source of protein”).

Like your protein concentrated? Analysts say sales are up for high-protein bars.

“As Americans are becoming more health conscious and busier, protein bar sales are increasing because they are a convenient way to gain protein on the go,” said IBISWorld analyst Mary Nanfelt, adding that many protein bars are eaten after a workout to help the stressed-out muscles.

Also popular are the protein-rich powders, often made with whey, once associated mostly with weightlifters looking to bulk up. Perry said her protein powders — which are vegan because they sit in her stomach better — make her feel more energetic.

“I used to be afraid of it. And I have friends and clients who are sort of afraid of it. They think, ‘Oh, I’m going to gain too much weight, it’s too many calories.’ But what they don’t know — and this is common for a lot of women — is that they’re not getting enough calories, and they’re not getting enough protein.”

Actually, most Americans eat plenty of protein. The latest available federal survey of what Americans eat, which covers 2007-2008, shows both men and women commonly consuming more protein than needed, sometimes by a third or more.

Of course, the amount of protein needed varies by age, weight and activity level, though federal recommendations suggest 56 grams daily for a 154 pound man and 46 grams for a 126 pound woman. Those levels are not difficult to achieve if, say, you scramble eggs for breakfast, grab a couple of slices of pepperoni pizza for lunch and eat chicken and broccoli for dinner.

“There’s this whole idea that I think a lot of people are plagued by that you have to get so much protein. And the truth is most of us do get enough protein and you don’t have to have as much as you think,” said Marisa Moore, an Atlanta-based dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

People worried about protein might do better focusing on a healthy, diverse diet rather than counting grams.

Margaret McDowell, a nutritionist with the National Institutes of Health’s Division of Nutrition Research Coordination, notes that lean meats and poultry, seafood and fat-free dairy products are all good ways to get protein.

“If you can consume your foods from a normal diet, that would be preferable because foods give a lot of other things beside protein and it’s probably more tasty and enjoyable to eat a lean piece of grilled chicken,” McDowell said. “I only eat protein bars if I’m desperate, if I’m running for a long time or need a quick snack.”

Proteins from meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and milk are “complete,” meaning they contain all the essential amino acids the body needs, while proteins in plants like beans and peas, grains, nuts, seeds, and soy are “incomplete” proteins because they lack in one or more of the essential amino acids. This is why a vegan diet takes a little bit more planning.

But McDowell said a vegan diet can provide adequate protein by including a variety of plant protein sources.

“I think most of us don’t need a supplement,” McDowell said.

Lauren Goodger’s Cambridge diet plan has been ‘really difficult’, says to …

Lauren Goodger‘s diet has been seriously gruelling – and TOWIE‘s Lydia Bright reckons there’s no way she could stick to a weight loss plan that strict.

She EXCLUSIVELY told OK.co.uk: “She’s been doing this Cambridge diet which has been really difficult. She’s been really good and everyone has been supportive but it’s a hard diet to do.

“You’re only allowed liquids and powder formulas and things like that. But everyone has been supporting her, she’s been doing really well.”

And while the rest of the TOWIE girls have been sticking with their No Carbs Before Marbs rule ahead of their annual holiday to Marbella together, Lydia says she’d fear for her life if she cut out carbs completely – even if it was all in the name of looking good in a bikini!

[ See more: Lauren Goodger makes her TOWIE return for the season finale, has a row with Tom - awkward ]

She told us: “I think if I did that I’d probably end up passing away! I don’t think I’ve got too much to lose.

“If I had a little bit of weight to lose I might do the No Carbs Before Marbs thing but I don’t really do that because I think I’m at my perfect weight at the moment.”

We had a chat with the gorgeous 20-year-old about her best beauty and diet tips, including preparations for Marbella…

You’re at your “perfect weight”, but do you have any body hang-ups at all?
“I don’t have a body hang-ups, well not anything that I hate. I have areas that I have to work on, everyone has something they have to pay extra attention to, mine is my stomach.

“I’ve always had naturally toned legs because I used to be a dancer. But my problem area… if I was to put on weight, it would always go on my stomach.

“My core is where I have to do most of my work on. I rarely do much to my legs. Just before I go abroad I do work on my stomach, I make sure I do a few planks every night before bed!”

Do you ever go on TOWIE-style diets?
No, to be honest, I eat really healthily anyway. I’m really into healthy
eating, I eat fresh foods and I only really eat British meat and fish -
I’m into all the healthy stuff (for appearance and for my health). I don’t
restrict myself at all.

What would you eat during a ‘normal’ day?
“For breakfast I have poached eggs on toast – always brown bread, I rarely eat white bread because apparently that’s really bad for you! I’m not big on sweets so I never have cereal. I have spinach with poached eggs, I eat a lot of eggs for breakfast!

“For lunch I’ll eat a big bowl of pasta, I’m Italian so I like to eat a lot of pasta. I normally have linguine with seafood or something similar.

“For dinner… I eat quite a lot of Japanese food, so I might have salmon sashimi and edamame beans, that sort of thing. I eat a LOT of Japanese food.”

What’s your daily exercise regime?
“I don’t really have one! I just fit it into my life when ever I have time. I walk around a lot, which is good for me. I just exercise to get myself toned. I don’t do much cardio, I just do sit-ups and lunges.”

Are there any TOWIE-specific beauty regimes that you don’t follow?
“I’ve never really been a huge fan of fake tan, I wear it occasionally,
especially now that summer is coming back – I have been putting on a
little bit.

“But I don’t wear a lot of it. Obviously that’s a big thing
for all the TOWIE girls, they’re all known for it. But I don’t follow
that religiously, I’m not really true to Essex in that respect.

“Everyone knows it’s me, they just expect it
from me! I’ve never really been one to fit in with the whole stereotype
anyway, so it’s expected from me!”

[ See more: TOWIE's Arg and Gemma FINALLY kiss as they finish the series with a secret snog at the Jubilee party ]

Would you ever go out without make-up on?
“Yeah, I’ve not got make-up on at the moment. I don’t wear it all the time, but I wouldn’t rock up to a red carpet barefaced!”

Did you enjoy watching the TOWIE series five finale?
It was good night, it was a good show with a good ending and we’re having a bit of a break before we fly off to Marbella to do the special.

What are your summer beauty tips ahead of Marbella?
“Exfoliation! That’s a big thing, it’s important to get your skin ready, especially if you’re tanning – you don’t want to peel!

“Shaving is a must-do, you don’t want to be on the beach and be like a hairy gorilla, do you! I use the BIC Soleil shaver, it’s definitely a useful product.

“I also use a little base colour before I get on the plane, I’ve got fair skin so when I go away I like to put on a little fake tan just before I leave.”

Tell us about the Miss Sunshine campaign…
“They’re looking for four ladies that can represent the BIC Soleil shavers and they’re going to take them on a holiday to St Tropez, which will be absolutely amazing and a fabulous time.

“They’re going to have a proper photoshoot and it’s going to be very girly and very Sex And The City, it’ll be fun and glamorous. I’m really excited to be involved, it’s all about getting glam and getting ready for the summer.”

Chaka Khan’s weight loss has been stirring up conversation, most notably recently when the legendary singer performed at the American Idol season finale in a revealing bronze catsuit. The slimmer curves sported by the diva, it turns out, are due to an extreme protein diet on which Khan subsisted for four months. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Khan revealed to Access Hollywood:

“I started out fasting … for four months. I did nothing but liquids; me and my VitaMix were best friends.

“In the morning I’d have a high protein smoothie and in the afternoon I’d have a vegetable smoothie and in the evening I’d have another protein smoothie.”

High protein diets are not a new way to lose weight, the most famous one being the Atkins diet, which promotes weight loss through the nearly complete exclusion of carbohydrates from one’s meal plans. One of the reasons they tend to work so well — as is evidenced by Chaka’s fab new figure — is that protein itself seems to curb hunger more than fats or carbs. This allows people to eat less, which is of course the main key to losing weight.

The medical reference web site Web MD explains this phenomenon in its detailed piece on the popularity of high-protein diets. “High-protein diets have become a popular way to lose weight because emerging research has hinted that protein may be able to satisfy hunger better than either fats or carbohydrates,” the site reports.  Yet, “Researchers don’t understand exactly how protein works to turn down appetite.” Despite this, studies find that those who engage in high-protein diets combined with exercise lose more weight and feel less deprived than those that merely engage in calorie restriction alone. In addition, lean muscle mass is maintained on this kind of diet. Maintaining muscle mass keeps one’s metabolism high and in a fat burning state, even when one is at rest.

While eating more than the recommended daily allowance of protein is not dangerous unless one has kidney disease, there are important things to keep in mind even if you are wowed by the weight loss potential of protein diets exhibited by Khan. Experts agree that following a diet like Khan’s should be healthy for most — but for no more than three or four months. In addition, the quality of the protein you are ingesting is important to consider, as well as making sure that you are supplementing that protein with enough nutrient-dense foods. This means sticking to lean meats, not hot dogs or processed meats, and adding fresh vegetables. These diets are NOT for those taking heart or liver medication, or folks suffering from chronic illnesses.

The long term effects of high protein diets have not been studied. “These plans often restrict carbs so severely that nutritional deficiencies could arise, according to the Mayo Clinic,” warns U.S. News World Report in an article ranking high-protein diets. “And diets that encourage red meat and full-fat dairy, which are rich in saturated fat, could raise the risk of heart disease.” A risk many black people are not in a position to wager.

But, if you are looking for a relatively quick way to lose weight without hunger, a diet similar to Khan’s maintained for a few months might be the way to go. If you want to go really extreme, you might even experiment with the infamous K-E Diet, involving a feeding tube (down the nostril) and a bag of protein you literally carry around for ten days — and nothing else. Shocking, but it works. You have to see the video for yourself.

What do you think of these extreme protein diets? Would you go to the extreme of Chaka Khan — or K-E diet fans — to lose weight and preserve muscle without hunger?

New York plans a ban on big soda sizes

”Obesity is a nationwide problem, and all over the United States, public health officials are wringing their hands saying, ‘Oh, this is terrible,’” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in an interview on Wednesday in City Hall’s sprawling Governor’s Room.

”New York City is not about wringing your hands; it’s about doing something,” he said.

”The New York City health department’s unhealthy obsession with attacking soft drinks is again pushing them over the top,” the industry spokesman, Stefan Friedman, said. “It’s time for serious health professionals to move on and seek solutions that are going to actually curb obesity. These zealous proposals just distract from the hard work that needs to be done on this front.”

Bloomberg’s proposal requires the approval of the Board of Health, a step that is considered likely because the members are all appointed by him, and the board’s chairman is the city’s health commissioner, who joined the mayor in supporting the measure on Wednesday.

The measures have led to occasional derision of the mayor as “Nanny Bloomberg” by those who view the restrictions as infringements on personal freedom.

Corner stores and bodegas would be affected if they are defined by the city as “food service establishments.” Those stores can most easily be identified by the health department letter grades they are required to display in their windows.

The mayor, who said he occasionally drank a diet soda “on a hot day,” contested the idea that the plan would limit consumers’ choices, saying the option to buy more soda would always be available.

”Your argument, I guess, could be that it’s a little less convenient to have to carry two 16-ounce drinks to your seat in the movie theater rather than one 32 ounce,” Bloomberg said in a sarcastic tone. “I don’t think you can make the case that we’re taking things away.”

He also said he foresaw no adverse effect on local businesses, and he suggested that restaurants could simply charge more for smaller drinks if their sales were to drop.

The Bloomberg administration had made previous, unsuccessful efforts to make soda consumption less appealing. The mayor supported a state tax on sodas, but the measure died in Albany, and he tried to restrict the use of food stamps to buy sodas, but the idea was rejected by federal regulators.

With the new proposal, City Hall is now trying to see how much it can accomplish without requiring outside approval. Mayoral aides say they are confident that they have the legal authority to restrict soda sales, based on the city’s jurisdiction over local eating establishments, the same oversight that allows for the health department’s letter-grade cleanliness rating system for restaurants.

Colin Moynihan contributed reporting.

For many Santa Monica College students, summer consists of surfing, sailing, swimming, travelling, and sunbathing. With these activities on the horizon, some may forgo that ice cream cone on a hot summer day, or sacrifice that juicy hamburger at a barbeque, while adopting extreme diets in attempt to perfect their beach bodies.

However, for 18-year-old SMC student Geraldine Guzman Hernandez, hamburgers and tacos are typical meals. As a dancer, she stays in shape, and finds that she does not need to stress about attaining an ideal “bikini body.”

“I am the type of person that eats a lot, but never gets fat, so I never have to worry about changing my workout plans for summer,” says Guzman.

Though health experts recommend slow weight loss for optimal results, many summer dieters adopt fad diets and cleanses that promise drastic weight loss in short amounts of time.

The Master Cleanse entails drinking only water with lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper for 10 straight days. In the Cabbage Soup Diet, all a person eats for 10 days is cabbage soup. The Cookie Diet consists of cookies that contain a “special amino acid formula to assist with weight loss” every few hours, says registered dietitian and Santa Monica College nutrition professor Yvonne Ortega.

Though these diets may yield quick weight loss, Ortega does not recommend relying on them to lose weight in the long run. Most fad diets are not meant to keep weight off, so a person will likely gain back the pounds they lost once they resume their previous eating habits.

“The key to success is maintaining the weight loss,” says Ortega. “If you maintain the weight loss for one year, there is a high chance you will not gain it back.”

According to Ortega, weight loss consists of both decreasing caloric and fat intake, especially saturated fats.

Dieters are often advised to avoid empty calories such as candy, french fries, potato chips, and other fried foods, and resist the urge to drink soda and alcoholic beverages, which are all packed with hundreds of calories that provide little to no nutritional value.

“It is recommended that a person strive for a one-to-two-pound weight loss per week, or 10 percent of their body weight in six months,” she says, explaining that this approach is the healthy, long-term alternative to fad diets.

In order to maintain weight loss, Ortega says that dieting alone is not enough, as fat must be burned and muscles strengthened. Typically, a person must burn more calories than they consume per day. There are 3,500 calories in a pound, so a deficit of 3,500 calories must be created to lose a pound.

“Exercise is critical to [weight loss] success and overall health,” says Ortega.

Exercising for 60 to 90 minutes a day is recommended for weight loss, but most people are not even reaching 30 minutes a day, she says.

“My favorite workouts are dancing and running,” says Guzman. “I do not exercise often, but when I dance, I can dance for hours. I believe dancing is a good workout.”

Leslie Porter, a yoga and Pilates instructor at SMC, suggests a balance of both diet and several forms of exercise for effective weight loss. She recommends following an exercise program four to six times per week, starting with a short amount of time, and working up to the recommendation.

“It’s important to include all aspects of fitness into your program like stretching, resistance training, as well as cardio,” Ortega says. “Muscles will burn more energy than fat, so exercise will definitely help with weight loss.”

“Cardio” includes running, jogging, dancing, swimming, and any form of exercise that keeps the heart rate above 70 beats per minute.

“Listen to your body, and take days off to rest if you’re exhausted,” suggests Porter, who emphasizes that stress, hormones, and lack of sleep can contribute to weight gain.

“Summer is almost here, so getting fit in two weeks is more like a New Year’s Eve resolution that a healthy fitness goal,” says Porter. “It’s better to think long-term than short-term. Be gentle with the process.”
