Medifast and NutriSystem are two of the most popular meal delivery diets on the market today. Both provide you with pre-portioned, calorie controlled meals and snacks that take most of the guess work out of preparing a healthy diet for around the same price. So which diet is right for you? We take a look at the similarities, and a few differences, between these successful diets.
Overview
Medifast is a home meal delivery service that provides you with portion controlled, high protein meals. Named #7 on the list of the Best Commercial Diets by US News in 2011, Medifast claims dieters can lose up to 20 pounds in their first month. The success of the Medifast program has been proven in multiple clinical studies, including a Johns Hopkins study that found Medifast helps dieters lose weight quickly and safely, and helped type 2 diabetics lose twice as much weight as those following the American Diabetes Association’s dietary recommendations. Medifast also showed improvements in those with hypertension and high cholesterol.
NutriSystem is also a meal delivery service that provides meals and snacks that are calorie-controlled and pre-prepared, only requiring you to supplement in a few fresh foods. NutriSystem meals are available in both shelf-stable options and their fresh-frozen line of meals.
Price
Medifast is reasonably priced and doesn’t require you to purchase any additional food. All of the Medifast products are available for purchase through their website, and you can also purchase meals at a few physical centers throughout the country. Prices vary based on your meal choices, but two weeks worth of meals and snacks will set you back about $160.00. For more accurate pricing, see the Medifast website.
NutriSystem will run you anywhere from about $263.00 to $342.00 per month depending on the how many months you buy at a time and any discounts that are available, making it a little more expensive on average than Medifast, but it all depends on what you purchase.
Meals
The Medifast menu consists of shakes, bars, soups, and sides you can mix and match to create your daily menu. Medifast offers 70 meal choices for different palates and dietary needs. There are Medifast products available for Kosher, low glycemic, lactose-free and vegetarian diets with specific plans for men, women, and diabetics. The Medifast plan takes out all the prep work and planning time of a healthy diet, but some find the low carb aspect hard to adjust to and social situations are difficult due to the lack of flexibility in the meals.
Experts agree NutriSystem is healthy and well balanced, and low in saturated and trans fats. NutriSystem meals also have a low glycemic index, and are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. NutriSystem offers numerous plans depending on your needs, including plans designed for men, women, diabetics and vegetarians. Plans and meals are purchased from NutriSystem’s website, but you will need to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables on your own.
To learn more about the many programs NutriSystem has to offer, read our full NutriSystem review.
The Medifast website offers exercise guidelines, but there is no specific workout program. Medifast encourages daily exercise, but for how long and how often is for you to decide. Medifast recommends waiting two to three weeks before introducing exercise to your program. Consult your physician if you are new to exercise. If you have been exercising consistently before starting Medifast, they recommend you reduce your intensity for the first couple of weeks so your body can adjust to the lower level of calories you will be consuming. They also recommend limiting vigorous physical activity to 45 minutes a day.
NutriSystem has created three workout DVDs; two titled Women’s Walk and Silver Walk, created by fitness expert Leslie Sansone, and a third DVD for men created by former NFL pro Vaughn Hebron called Functional Movement Workout. While you will recieve a DVD based on what best suits the program you chose, how often you exercise is left up to you, with no guidelines set in place.
Conclusion
Medifast and NutriSystem are very similiar. The two main differences are price: NutriSystem is more expensive on average, but NutriSystem has many plans to choose from which can make it cheaper than Medifast, and flexibility: NutriSystem offers many, many different plans to choose from, ranging from 100 percent controlled to only partially where you have some flexibility to eat out or prepare your own meals. For a more customizable plan, go for NutriSystem, but you will have to purchase additional food. If you want everything laid out for you, with zero extra work, choose Medifast. It is rigid, which makes it easy if you can stick to it.

According to everydayhealth.com there may be simple reasons why your diet doesn’t seem to be working.
Here are the 12 common diet mistakes that can play a role in why the scale isn’t showing lost pounds:
1. Not exercising enough – calories burned equals duration and intensity. Weight-bearing exercises like running, walking and aerobics burns more calories than non-weight bearing exercises like cycling and swimming because the gravitational stress on muscles is less.
2. Not getting enough sleep – lack of sleep can affect the proper sequence of hormone release and staying up late can lead to extra calories in late night snacks.
3. Skipping meals – leads to food cravings and overeating later in the day
4. Eating too many calories – portion intake plays a role in counting calories
5. Stress – a study by Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, and the University of Pittsburgh found stress can lead to weight gain in women, particularly middle age women. Why? Possible altered sleep patterns and fat conservation, both possibly hormonally related, and the fact many women manage their feelings by eating.
6. Drinking too many calories – beverages contribute significant calories to daily caloric intake. Sodas range between 150 to 200 calories, no sugar added fruit juice up to 180 and sweet tea about 150, while sports drinks are 100 calories or more. Switch to water to save calories.
7. Sabotaging choices - healthy salads loaded with high calorie dressings and toppings; burning 300 calories walking and then eating a 300 calorie muffin
8. Slipping on weekends – indulgences on weekends can add up quickly like dessert and alcohol splurges.
9. Impatient – Dieting results take time
10. You’ve reached a plateau – a common occurrence. In time weight loss will resume
11. Medical conditions – conditions that lead to decreased mobility and some medications can affect attempts to loose weight. Talk to your physician about exercise in the form rehab activity, adjusting medications and working with a dietician to adjust meal plans.
12. You don’t need to lose more weight – your body may be telling you your weight is appropriate for you height and size. Further attempts at weight loss might lead to muscle loss and a metabolism slowdown

Name: Keith Moore
Age: 33
Height: 5’10″
Before Weight: 293 pounds
How I Gained It: I was never careful of what I ate my entire life. I didn’t know what a portion was, I did not know what the right foods were to eat. I wanted to get the best value for my money, so I’d go to a buffet and eat and eat and eat. I would get the most food for the best value and with that I found my weight increasing exponentially.
I was working 80 hours a week in retail, and I would just grab a candy bar to keep me on my feet to keep my energy up. I would eat horrible junk food like chips, soda and fast food in the small time allotted for a break. I would fast all day and then compress thousands of calories into nighttime eating.
I was terribly unhealthy. My doctor told me I was morbidly obese, but for years I didn’t believe him. I was in denial. He said that obesity was linked to conditions that run in my family, like heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, so he really wanted me to get a handle on my weight before I got older and these things started becoming more serious issues.
Breaking Point: I had recently been laid off. If I was bored, I ate. I watched TV and snacked. I had nothing to do … I was eating, eating and eating more.
I didn’t have a breaking point until I saw my wife Jen start to lose weight with Hoopnotica. I thought, “Okay, here’s another one of Jen’s wacky ideas,” but this time she was absolutely serious. We started to team up; she found a healthier food plan to fit with my likes and dislikes.
I never saw the weight go on, I was in denial. I thought realistically that I could stand to lose 20 pounds, but after three weeks and 20 pounds were gone, I was still pretty much the same. That’s when I got serious about weight loss and changing my lifestyle to a healthier life for my wife and children.
How I Lost It: I kept to my meal plan, and I still do. Jen and I say we have a “condition” that we will have for the rest of our lives. I regulate myself. When I’m not careful, I can put weight back on very quickly.
We don’t eat out anymore. I felt especially horrible after the last time we did. We cook for ourselves and eat healthy, organic food whenever possible.
I started losing weight by hooping and took off a ton of pure fat. I didn’t want to put on muscle yet; it’s extra weight that I did not want to carry around. I wasn’t healthy at the time, so I felt like bulking up would be counter-intuitive. I wanted to keep thin and healthy. I did endurance-style exercises like running to complement my Hoopnotica training. I really worried about my health and my heart, so I kept up the cardio.
After I lost an initial 90 pounds or so, I started to think about muscle. I do weight train now, but I still don’t want to be too big. Right now it’s all about maintenance. I never feel deprived; I feel very satisfied. I hit the gym five, sometimes six days a week.
The best part about losing weight was that it gave me an opportunity to have time with my kids and my wife. I don’t want to miss another landmark in my children’s lives. I really hope that Jen and I can instill In our children the same urgency to stamp out obesity from their lives. Jen and I ate horribly for years. We tell our children this is what we used to look like, we don’t want you to end up like we were. We make sure to remind them how important whole foods are, instead of processed junk.
I am now a Hoopnotica instructor and I am on my way to getting a degree in health/exercise science. I want to use my newfound love to pay it forward — spread the hoop love and healthy living!

He has prescribed the hormone to some of his patients so they may follow an associated diet plan, but Dr. Stefan Schaefer, a local physician, said he’s “not enthralled with it.”
For Las Cruces-based registered dietitian Rosa Lopez, the protocol known as the hCG diet brings frustration.
“I have an issue with plans that don’t teach people about their choices, and don’t let them keep (weight) off,” she said.
Last December, the Food and Drug Administration went on the attack against over-the-counter hCG products explicitly, while firing an implicit shot at the hCG diet.
When Sandy Zalecki, 55, first heard of the hCG diet, she was skeptical, too.
Human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, is a hormone most commonly produced by developing embryos, and found in pregnant women.
The FDA issued warning letters to seven manufacturers that were marketing over-the-counter hCG products, labeled has a “homeopathic” means of weight loss.
In a news release, the FDA wrote that these manufacturers were, “violating federal law by selling drugs that have not been approved, and by making unsupported claims for the substances.”
The FDA has not approved any hCG weight loss products, and hCG is legally available now only by prescription.
But back then, Zalecki was frustrated.
She had never been heavy, but gained significant weight after age 35. At the same time, she had what she described as gastrointestinal issues, blackouts and “fuzzy thinking.”
“Everything was starting to
get screwed up,” she said.
Zalecki’s hunch was that her sudden health problems were being caused by her relatively new job at a Phoenix chemical plant. She was turned off by doctors who wanted to treat her with medication — more chemicals, to her thinking.
A cleanse recommended by a homeopathic doctor helped some of Zalecki’s issues, but not her hypoglycemia. She said she had to eat constantly — every two hours, even waking up at night — to avoid feeling faint.
As a result of that, Zalecki gained about 150 pounds over a three-year period. She had tried several diets, but was nearly 300 pounds by 2009.
Eventually, she tried the hCG diet protocol, which incorporates what the FDA calls a “severely restrictive diet” (500 calories per day) and injections of the hormone. The hormone, hCG, is supposed to curb hunger and reset certain glands, the same claims asserted since the protocol was first written about in the 1950s.
“I figured, I’ve tried every other harebrained thing, I might as well try it,” Zalecki said.
In about 18 months, she lost 130 pounds. She said it also fixed her other ailments, as she no longer takes many of the medications she once had.
Now a believer, Zalecki serves as a consultant at Obesity Disease Center, a counseling clinic. She offers tips and shares her experiences with others, particularly those interested in the hCG diet.
Schaefer and Lopez have talked with those people, too.
“One woman said, ‘It changed my life,’” Schaefer recalled.
The only FDA approved reason a doctor can prescribe hCG is for fertility treatment. But doctors can write prescriptions for off-label purposes. The diet protocol fits that description for hCG.
“I think it should be done under the supervision of a physician,” Schaefer said. ” things like that are not the cure-all.”
He admits that he has seen people on the hCG diet protocol lose weight, but said there’s no evidence that the hormone plays any role. Schaefer noted that placebo studies have yielded similar results.
Lopez said it’s a simple matter of drastically reducing calorie intake.
She said Americans, on average, eat between 2,600 to 3,000 calories per day (excessive for most people), and that typical weight-loss diets cut those calories to between 900 and 1,200 per day. Based on those numbers, Lopez said it’s easy to see how a person could lose weight on a 500-calorie diet.
The problem, she added, is that extreme of a diet has less than a 10 percent success rate for keeping the weight off long-term — and may compound other health issues.
The FDA’s news release that warns consumers about illegal hCG products also says that a 500-calorie diet is “unhealthy,” “hazardous” and “potentially fatal.” Some of the side effects: gallstone formation, electrolyte imbalance and irregular heartbeat. The release also notes that anybody limiting themselves to 500 calories per day should do so only under doctor supervision.
As for use of hCG itself, there are some rare but serious side effects, including an allergic reaction — rash, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, dizziness, and trouble breathing — and thyroid concerns. That underscores the importance of consulting a physician.
Despite her skepticism, Lopez admitted that hCG could help with user’s motivation and confidence.
That could also apply to products marketed as with the confusing title “hormone-free hCG.” Those are said to have a similar chemical structure to the federally regulated hormone, and to offer similar benefits. As long as there is no hCG in the product, and it doesn’t claim extra weight-loss benefits, it is legal to market.
“This is the problem,” Lopez said. “They are legally allowed to sell them without science.”
Schaefer calls homeopathic hCG a “scam.”
Yet despite those opinions, which are echoed throughout the medical community, there are people such as Zalecki, who have lost weight on the hCG diet, even while using non-hormone hCG products.
Zalecki, wanting to drop more weight, started the hCG protocol again last month.
It’s her eighth time on the regimen.

What is hCG?
Human chorionic gonadotropin is a hormone most commonly produced by developing embryos, and found in pregnant women
Pregnancy tests are designed to detect trace amounts of hCG, which can be present in urine as soon as 10 days after conception, according to the National Health Institutes
hCG is also secreted by some cancerous cells
hCG is used to treat fertility issues in women and men
Play ball!
If you follow baseball closely enough, you are probably aware of hCG for a different reason.
In 2008, according to reports, former Major League slugger and self-professed steroid user Jose Canseco was detained by immigration officials near San Diego for trying to bring hCG into Mexico.
A year later, then-Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez was suspended 50 games for violating baseball’s drug policy; he tested positive for hCG.
In men, hCG is used as a fertility booster because it helps increase testosterone production. Steroid users are known to use hCG because it helps reset their bodies’ natural testosterone production, a process that stops during cycles of anabolic steroid use.
Buyer beware
These manufacturers and their products were initially targeted by a joint action of the FDA and FTC because the items they sold were deemed illegal homeopathic weight loss products.

Summertime is a great time to shed excess weight. Unfortunately, as we age, it becomes harder to shed the pounds. It is easy to be envious of the beautiful 40+ stars like Sheryl Crow, Halle Berry, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, Michelle Pfieffer, Iman, Christie Brinkley and many more who are as slim and trim as their 20-something counterparts. My patients wonder how do they do it! Well, we know it is not because of a diet full of chilidogs and nachos. You have to work at it, exercise and make the right food choices.
A little help from our friends
But sometimes we need a little extra help, and here is where the right nutrients can make a difference. A young cell is characterized by its energy production, just like a young body. As we age, our physical output decreases. To this end, I have looked for methods to increase energy, naturally and safely, at the cellular level. This has led me to a number of nutrients that work in a special way to enhance the loss of body fat, preserve muscle mass and regulate levels of blood sugar and insulin — key attributes of a healthy, young body, regardless of chronological age. They will also promote beautiful, healthy, youthful-looking skin. Here are ten of my favorites:
1. Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)
Alpha lipoic acid, often referred to as ‘the universal antioxidant,” is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory found naturally inside of the energy producing portion of the cell known as the mitochondria. Alpha lipoic acid enhances our ability to metabolize food into energy. ALA is a unique antioxidant because it is both fat and water soluble. This means it can go to all parts of the cell, including the lipid (fat) portions such as the cell plasma membrane, as well as the interior of the cell (known as the cytoplasm) where water soluble chemicals reside.
2. DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol)
DMAE is a naturally occurring nutritional substance with powerful anti-inflammatory properties; it is found in fish including wild Alaskan salmon, anchovies and sardines. DMAE is important in the production of neurotransmitters, which are essential in the communication from one nerve to another and between nerves and muscles. Taking DMAE as a supplement will not only improve your cognitive function by improving memory and problem-solving ability, it will help increase skin firmness and muscle tone — important for anyone on a weight loss or anti-aging program.
3. Glutamine
Glutamine is the body’s most abundant amino acid. It plays an important role in keeping the muscles functioning properly and helps reduce muscle deterioration. Glutamine literally drives muscle-building nitrogen into the muscle cell where it is synthesized for growth. It is also converted into glucose when the body needs more energy. When the body is in a highly inflammatory state, it breaks down our muscle tissue to get the extra glutamine needed, resulting in muscle mass loss.
4. Carnitine
Carnitine and its derivative, acetyl L-carnitine, are two of the most important nutrients for weight loss. Carnitine is critical for energy formation and an active metabolism. Carnitine transports the fatty acids from our blood into the cell for this energy production. Thus, for carnitine to have optimum effect, we must have adequate essential fatty acids, such as omega 3′s, present in the diet.
5. Acetyl L-carnitine
Acetyl L-carnitine acts as an antioxidant, a natural anti-inflammatory that enhances the affects of the other antioxidant systems within the body. These anti-inflammatory properties protect the cell plasma membrane (the cell’s first line of defense) and prevent the conversion of arachidonic acid into pro-inflammatory chemicals. Although exercise will naturally increase our levels of acetyl L-carnitine, if we are obese, over thirty or have other health problems, it will not raise them to therapeutic levels, therefore supplementation is necessary.
6. Coenzyme Q – 10
Coenzyme Q-10, also called ubiquinone, is a powerful antioxidant/anti-inflammatory with many benefits for treating and preventing obesity. It acts similarly to acetyl L-carnitine in that it assists in energy production within the mitochondria. CoQ10 enhances the metabolism, giving us greater energy and endurance, a greater ability to lose body fat, preventing the energy decline seen in aging cells. CoQ10 also maximizes the burning of foods for fuel, helping to normalize fats in our blood.
7. Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)
Conjugated linoleic acid is a fatty acid found in many of the foods we eat. At one time, beef and lamb were exceptional sources; however when their diet was changed from grass to grain, levels of CLA dramatically decreased in the meat and dairy products. CLA has powerful antioxidant/anti-inflammatory activity. It decreases body fat, especially in the area of the abdomen and helps block the absorption of fat and sugar into fat cells (adipocytes). It also helps the insulin receptors remain intact, thus increasing insulin sensitivity.
8. Chromium
Because Chromium is an essential nutrient for normal sugar and fat metabolism, it is critical in our effort to control and reduce excess body fat. Chromium supplementation effectively lowers blood sugar and insulin levels and can also increase levels of the ‘good’ HDL cholesterol. This lowers total cholesterol and triglycerides, thus playing a key role in regulating appetite, reducing sugar cravings, and lowering body fat.
9. Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA)
Gamma linolenic acid is an important omega-6 essential fatty acid. The average American diet causes a deficiency of GLA because of the large amounts of trans fatty acids, sugar, red meats and dairy products. The body rapidly converts GLA into dihomo-gamma-linoleic acid, the precursor of prostaglandin E1, a powerful anti-inflammatory hormone-like compound that helps to regulate inflammation, blood pressure, and many other bodily processes.
10. Maitake Mushroom Extract
Studies show that maitake mushroom extract enhances insulin sensitivity for controlling blood sugar levels and may serve as a safe and reliable weight loss supplement — even without additional behavior modifications, such as decreased caloric intake and increased exercise. It is established as a powerful tool in preventing a dangerous quartet of metabolic imbalances that increase our risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes called Metabolic Syndrome. Metabolic Syndrome consists of high blood pressure, elevated levels of insulin, excess weight (especially around the abdomen), and dyslipidemialow, or low levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, high levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, and high levels of triglycerides.

Nobody should have to completely ban themselves from Easter eggs and Hot Cross Buns, just because they are trying to get in shape. JENNY CRAIG dietitian Jacqui Morrell says: “To keep morale high and so dieters don’t feel deprived, we suggest that dieters can treat themselves from time to time. The trick is not to overdose on treats and to keep in mind that there is more to Easter than chocolate.” The weight loss experts have put together the following Easter Survival Manifesto to help people with their diet plans during Easter.
1. Easter is the end of lent, so don’t start indulging before Easter Day.
2. Egg yourself on to reach a specific goal that you would like to achieve before Easter. Aim for a weight loss of 1 to 2lbs per week.
3. One Hot Cross Bun is the equivalent of two slices of bread and contains a lot less fat than a croissant.
4. Authentic Easter eggs are decorated boiled eggs. This chocolate free variety is wonderful at the breakfast table. For inspiration, look up how the Orthodox Greeks dye their eggs red with onion skins.
5. Outdoor egg hunts are a fun way to burn a couple of extra calories.
6. The key to effective portion control is: quality over quantity.
7. Bonnets, bunnies, chicken! Have some fun and get active by making some Easter decorations with your kids.
8. Think about the whole experience when you eat your Easter treat. Take time to unwrap it and enjoy it!
9. Share your treats, so there is less for you!
10. To avoid temptation, give away your leftover treats after Easter Monday.

When I lost 25 pounds five years ago everyone asked me: How’d you do it?
What diet are you on? What pill are you taking? The answer, boringly enough, is: I eat the healthiest foods I can find. It’s not really a diet but a mindset-when you eat this way, you’re never hungry, don’t have to count calories and you can even have a treat every day. And no, I hate pills. I don’t even take Tylenol. People would hear this and roll their eyes and huff and say, whatever. They chalked up my weight loss to the fact that I exercise a lot…but I have always exercised a lot and despite it, carried 20 to 25 extra pounds on me. I was fit underneath, but fat on top.
My turnaround came when I decided to ditch junk food and bring on superfoods-foods that naturally help your body burn fat and be healthier. (Two of my all-time faves-coffee and dark chocolate-qualify!) I started eating more of them and when the weight peeled off and stayed off, I knew I’d hit on something powerful. I put it all down in a book called The Drop 10 Diet because that’s how many pounds you can lose in just 5 weeks, although you can keep going and lose as much as you want to. Eating this way, more than 40 testers shed weight equally as fast and as effortlessly as I did and now the idea has taken off.
The trick to the plan is to eat as many of the superfoods as you can at every meal and snack-each one is scientifically proven to help rev metabolism (protein and certain “good” fats do this) and shed belly fat (calcium is key). Some even keep every calorie you eat from sticking around (fiber is the magic ingredient here). By filling up on superfoods, you can, in just over one month, drop 10 pounds while staying full and satisfied. Plus, you’ll have more energy, be less stressed, and feel more motivated to work out because you’re fueling your body with the best nutrients Mother Nature can offer. Try it! There are 30 of these superfoods, including surprising picks like lean steak-its protein helps you build muscle, so your body burns more calories while you’re sitting there reading this. Get The Drop 10 Diet and start losing, today! Let the foods do the work for you!

It’s human nature to clean your plate — and the more you’re served (or serve yourself), the more you’re likely to eat. For example, when researchers at Pennsylvania State University in University Park gave people standard-size meals for 11 days, then supersized them by 50 percent, diners took in 423 more calories per day. If you need help sticking to sensible portions when eating meals off the Drop 10 plan, downsize your dishes: Smaller plates hold less. Also, if you have trouble eyeballing servings, whip out measuring spoons and cups. It’s worth taking a little extra time now so you won’t see pounds appear later.
